Job Summary:

The mission of the Murillo Family Observatory is to provide a state of the art research facility dedicated to meeting the observing and educational needs of the students, faculty and staff at California State University, San Bernardino and the general public. We volunteer our time to open to the public once a quarter, weather permitting. Under direct supervision incumbent(s) will support the Murillo Family Observatory Director running visitor night and general observing evenings. Student employees will assist with the public events as well as school groups. We are looking for motivated students to help navigate the telescopes during the observing nights (advance notice will be provided), as well as answer basic questions from the public and participate in the upgrade / renovations at the observatory. All training will occur during student working hours.

The following is a summary of expected duties. The list is not comprehensive and additional duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Assist with Observatory Open House and general observatory events, such as school group events
  • Student employee will assist with Telescope set up and maintenance
  • Student Assistant will perform other duties and responsibilities that relate to the Murillo Family as assigned by Director or delegated by department ASC and Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

  • Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.
  • Special Qualification: Admission or registration as a CSU student.
  • As a Bridge Student Assistant, the student need not be registered as a student, but must have been enrolled as a CSU student the previous term and is registered for the following term.

Required Qualifications:

  • Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
  • Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate)
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate)
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Payroll Requirement: Social Security Card

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Physics or other STEM majors

Compensation and Benefits:

Student Employment Anticipated Hiring Range: $16 per hour.

The compensation offered will consider internal equity and experience among other factors.


Position Information:

Work status: Part-Time, Temporary, Seasonal

Academic year available hours: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm).

Summer available hours: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm).

This is an 'On-Campus Only' position. Student Employees are not eligible to telecommute at any time.

Background Check
