The Department of Child and Family Development (CFD) at San Diego State University seeks applicants for a full-time, 10-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position with a research program focused on human gender, sexuality, and sexual orientation. Areas of potential focus may include: (1) gender and sexual diversity throughout the lifespan, including childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, (2) intersectionality of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), and/or (3) psychological, biological, cultural, and behavioral aspects of human sexuality and family life. The position will begin Fall 2025. The overarching criterion for a successful candidate is a demonstrated record of success in research, service, and teaching/mentoring historically marginalized students. Responsibilities:

● Maintain an active research agenda that specifically addresses diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging as it relates to the candidate’s area of research focus

● Maintain an active research agenda, securing extramural funding, and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals

● Teach coursework within the undergraduate B.S./CFD major and graduate programs

● Advise/mentor undergraduate and graduate students in the CFD program

● Participate in service at the department, college, and the university level

● Collaborate with department faculty and staff in departmental governance, program development, scholarship and service

● Serve as an active member of relevant scholarly societies and/or professional associations or professional organizations or campus committees, including those that advance historically marginalized populations

● Mentor or advise individual students, including those from historically marginalized populations

● Provide professional development-related services to the broader community The minimum salary for this position is based on the current CSU salary schedule for Assistant Professors and may be revised based on contract collective bargaining.

The anticipated starting salary range is from $85,000 - 89,000. Salary placement will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience, and salaries higher than the published maximums may be offered in limited circumstances. About the Child and Family Development Department:The SDSU Child and Family Development (CFD) Department’s mission is to prepare anti-racist, anti-bias professionals to address contemporary issues that affect the development, health, and well-being of children, youth, adults, families, and communities. This mission is accomplished through a culturally responsive curriculum with a strong emphasis on social-emotional development, social justice, and equity-minded education. The program represents an interdisciplinary field of study with the basic assumption that development takes place across the lifespan in the context of the family, community, and public policy. The Department's emphasis on reducing structural inequities through community-based outreach, prevention, advocacy, innovative research, theory application, and inclusive practices provides CFD students with a strong foundation for training and careers in education, health-related professions, human services, law, academia, and other meaningful fields of work. The Department includes 16 full-time and approximately 25 part-time faculty, and serves a student body of between 500 to 600 undergraduate majors and 100 graduate students. Our undergraduate major focuses on social-emotional development as the underlying foundation for all other areas of development including physical, cognitive, motor, and language. The program’s emphasis on primary prevention prepares students through hands-on, community-based field experience where students supervised work in community agencies, children's programs, the SDSU Children's Center, as well as multiple school districts across San Diego.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

● Doctorate degree in Family Studies, Child Development, Human Development and Family Science, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Education, Public Health or a closely related social science field. Doctoral students who will have their doctorate degree by the start of the position in Fall 2025 are eligible to apply.

● Demonstrated expertise in scholarship as it relates to the identities and experiences of gender and sexually diverse individuals and families

● We are seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of historically marginalized groups. Candidates must satisfy two or more of the eight Building on Inclusive Excellence (BIE) criteria. Candidates that meet BIE criteria:

a. are committed to engaging in service with historically marginalized populations within the discipline

b. have demonstrated knowledge of barriers for historically marginalized students and faculty within the discipline

c. have experience or have demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring historically marginalized students

d. have experience or have demonstrated commitment to integrating understanding of historically marginalized populations and communities into research

e. have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to extending knowledge of opportunities and challenges in achieving artistic/scholarly success to members of a historically marginalized group

f. have experience in or have demonstrated commitment to research that engages historically marginalized communities

g. have expertise or demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in cross- cultural communication and collaboration

h. have research interests that contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications:

● Scholarship focusing on intersectionality of gender and sexually diverse BIPOC populations

● Previous undergraduate teaching experience, particularly related to the identities and experiences of gender and sexually diverse individuals and families
