Position Summary

Are you committed to ensuring equal access to educational resources for students with disabilities? Do you excel in managing a diverse caseload and providing exceptional support? As the Accommodations Counselor, you will be the primary point of contact for students with various disabilities, reviewing documentation, authorizing accommodations, and serving as a key resource for students, faculty, and staff. You will work independently on complex cases, with support from the Lead Counselor and other professional staff as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Accommodation Management: Review disability documentation and assess the need for accommodations.
  • Support & Guidance: Serve as an information resource on disabilities, legislation, and best practices for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Case Management: Independently handle cases of varying complexity, consulting with supervisors and professional staff when necessary.
  • Compliance: Act as a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act, adhering to CSU Executive Order 1083.

Position Information

  • Full-time, benefits-eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on June 30, 2025, with the possibility of reappointment.
  • This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

Student Disability Services (SDS) in the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity provides a full range of accommodations and services to nearly 4,000 students with physical, psychological, and learning disabilities, facilitating equal access to the educational process.  This is accomplished through direct service support, review of campus accessibility, adaptive technology, assessment, test accommodation, and a variety of other services.  Accommodations vary according to types of disabilities, and may include sign language interpreting; provision of alternative formats, such as electronic text or Braille; computer-assisted real-time captioning; test accommodations; advising; assistive computer technology; cart transportation services, and numerous other services. Provision of these academic support services, technology and advocacy promotes the retention and graduation of students with disabilities at SDSU.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A Master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Key Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of disability laws and regulations, including federal and state legislation related to accessibility and privacy.
  • Ability to interpret medical and psycho-educational documentation in order to determine eligibility for disability accommodation.
  • Fluency in using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and database management systems.
  • Working knowledge of assistive technology hardware and software, as well as standard computer hardware and software.
  • General knowledge, acquired through a combination of education and experience, of the principles, practices and procedures related to disability services delivery in institutions of higher education is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,276 per month. 

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,276 - $7,517 per month.
