Position Summary

The Department Technician (IST I) is responsible for performing services to the Geology Department’s teaching and research curriculum under the general supervision of the Department Chair, including but not limited to: preparation of material for courses, preparation of rock thin sections, maintain department equipment and supplies, assist with field trips and courses, oversee department computer hardware and software usage, and assist in the safety and efficiency of the operation of the Geology Department.
 
This position requires an individual who is self-motivated, well-organized, displays good judgement, interacts well with others, and maintains an optimistic, service-oriented outlook.

FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,206.00 per month - $4,400.00 per month

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,206.00 - $7,299.00 per month

Department Information 

The Geology Department is an academic department within the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The Department offers numerous lecture and lab sections of a variety of lower-division courses covering general education requirements. The upper-division lecture, lab and field courses concentrate on the Geology major, fulfilling B.A., B.S. and M.S. degrees. There are currently eight full-time and several part-time faculty, and one technician in the department which serves about 100 Geology majors.

Minimum Qualifications 

Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of the principles of performing support services; knowledge of the common principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline; knowledge of the materials, supplies and equipment and their uses related to the discipline.
 
Ability to evaluate the materials and supplies used; ability to learn to adjust and make minor repairs on scientific equipment; ability to operate scientific or highly technical equipment and to interpret results; ability to plan activities and prepare schedules; ability to use methods, techniques and skills related to the discipline in preparing specialized materials.

Experience:
Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a unit or discipline, acting as a student assistant, or in producing materials or supplies related to the discipline

Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a related discipline may be substituted for the required experience.

Required Qualifications 

Experience:

  1. Experience using thin section and rock slicing equipment, including preparation of different rock types or materials.
  2. Experience using computers and computer peripherals, including basic office and graphics software.
  3. Experience using ground water monitoring devices.
 
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  1. Understanding of laboratory techniques and methods used by geologists.
  2. Ability to use and modify computer hardware and software interfaces with scientific instruments.
  3. Ability to operate lab equipment and instrumentation, providing routine maintenance when needed.
  4. Ability to trouble-shoot processes and pathways for sample handling and instrument operation.
  5. Ability to schedule and plan equipment utilization and preparation of samples for faculty and student use.
  6. Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn and apply lab, vehicle and equipment safety regulations.
  7. Ability to occasionally maneuver, transport, lift and carry up to 75lb.
  8. Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community.

License/Other

  • Valid driver's license and maintenance of good driving record.
