Job Summary

Under general supervision, the individual will provide comprehensive academic advising to undergraduates in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics with particular emphasis on assigned caseload of pre-majors.  The individual will provide information about University policies, procedures, and regulations to students; assist in the implementation and personal delivery of various academic advising programs/program information, workshops, and computer-based advising systems; and work on issues related to retention and progress of students.  This individual will participate in multiple college and university student success programs including but not limited to Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration, CNSM outreach to high school and community college students, Mandatory Freshman Advising, Freshmen Scholars Learning Community, and CNSM Early Warning Advising Programs. The incumbent will promote the principles of “growth mindset” model and metacognitive learning strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive academic advising to undergraduate population, using basic interviewing, and counseling techniques, in one-to-one appointments, “quick questions,” and in workshop settings.
  • Collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate student data, reports, and/or documents; for the CNSM Advising Center. This includes, but is not limited to, advising forms, degree progress reports, Education Advisory Board (EAB) data, CS Link reports, and student files.
  • Identify students at risk and prioritize those needing interventions and help.  Advise students on where to get assistance; help set up support groups.
  • Maintain cooperative and working relationships with academic departments, university services, programs, offices, and the University Center for Undergraduate Advising for the purpose of creating a seamless university advising environment.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community, both orally and in writing, while maintaining a safe work environment and interacting civilly with the University community. They should possess excellent critical thinking and interpersonal skills, along with a thorough knowledge of undergraduate science and mathematics degree requirements and career pathways. The role requires the ability to collect, organize, and analyze data to track student progress, and to develop, present, and implement changes in academic advising to align with the University’s registration, enrollment processes, and degree requirements. Additionally, the candidate should be adept at initiating prompt solutions to students’ issues related to academic appeals, retention, probation, graduation, and administrative reviews. Analyzing the causes of students’ problems through transcript examination and personal interviews, and providing appropriate academic and career counseling, recommendations, and referrals is essential. Proficiency in technical and computer skills, as well as familiarity with university policies and regulations.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

• Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

• Master’s degree preferred and may substituted for one year of experience.

Physical Summary

  • Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects. (10 pounds or less).

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $4,841 - $6,884 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
