California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in the Department of Kinesiology & Health Promotion. Cal Poly Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 23-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. Student Population. Cal Poly Pomona is the number one polytechnic university in the nation for student diversity and economic mobility. In Fall 2023, Cal Poly Pomona served more than 24,000 students and close to 2,000 graduate students, mostly residents of California. College of Science:  The College’s mission is to educate, mentor, and inspire students through scientific inquiry and hands-on learning. It offers 15 undergraduate degree programs and six Master’s degrees across seven academic departments that include: Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Science, Geological Sciences, Kinesiology & Health Promotion, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics & Astronomy. Our Center for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (CEMaST) supports K-16 education locally and nationally to increase STEM success and participation for all. The College of Science has approximately 150 full-time faculty, 40 staff, and 4,400 active majors. Our commitment to the teacher-scholar model results in our college being the largest recipient of extramural grant funding on campus. Department of Kinesiology & Health Promotion: The Kinesiology and Health Promotion (KHP) Department supports the college’s mission to educate, mentor, and inspire students through scientific inquiry and hands-on learning. Our objective is to advance the art and science of health and human movement.  We offer two B.S. degree programs (General Kinesiology and Physical Education Teacher Education) and an M.S. degree in Kinesiology. Five new undergraduate minors (Public Health, Sport & Social Justice, Adapted Physical Activity, Exercise Science, and Strength and Conditioning) and four new Master’s options (Adapted Physical Education, General Kinesiology, Health & Human Performance, and PE Leadership & Advocacy) are expected to launch in AY 2025-26. The KHP Department contains a vibrant, interdisciplinary faculty with expertise in adapted physical activity, biomechanics, cultural studies of sport and exercise, exercise physiology, health promotion, PE teacher education, and stress management. We foster curiosity and a culture of scientific discovery through our four research laboratories (the Mind & Heart Research Lab, the Motor Development Clinic, Human Performance Lab, and the Motor Neuroscience Lab), and our extensive service learning programming. We have three active student groups (the KHP club, Pre-PT/OT club & KHP Grad Connect) who prepare their members for impactful contributions to the fields of KHP. Position description: The Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion (KHP) at Cal Poly Pomona invites applications for the position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in the 2025-26 academic year. We are interested in candidates with expertise in Public Health who are excited to lead the development of our Public Health initiatives. This role includes driving forward our new Public Health minor (undergraduate), supporting existing service-learning programming, expanding community collaborations, and strengthening graduate-level scholarship.

We are looking for candidates who value the distinctive Cal Poly learn-by-doing approach, exemplify the Teacher Scholar Model, and embody the KHP core values. The successful candidate will be expected to further the diversity and excellence of the academic community through inclusive teaching, research and service. Minimum requirements include:

    • Doctorate (DPH, PhD, EdD) in Public Health or related field (Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position).
    • Demonstrates potential to be effective in college teaching related to Public Health
    • Commitment to contribute, teach, and engage in a multicultural environment with a diverse student body (>50% URM). [Evidence should be provided in a Student Success Statement that responds to the “Inclusive Excellence and Student Success” prompt above].
    • Commitment to service-learning, community-engaged learning, community-based participatory research and/or action research.
    • Demonstrates potential for a strong research, scholarly and creative agenda in Public Health
    • Demonstrates potential to grow our Public Health footprint with a forward thinking, growth mindset.
    • Effective interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

    • Master’s in Public Health (MPH)
    • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES)
    • Potential to secure external funding
    • Experience supervising undergraduate and graduate research
    • Willingness to develop new courses and/or course materials
    • Experience successfully collaborating with diverse populations
    • Experience working in the Public Health field 
    • Involvement and/or leadership positions in professional organizations

    • provide official transcripts for highest degree before the on-campus interview;
    • provide three letters of reference (on letterhead, signed and dated within the last two years);
    • give a teaching demonstration (topic shall be suggested by the search committee), as well as a scholarly presentation of their research/creative activities to faculty and students.
