Anticipated Hiring Range

$6,459.00/month ($77,508.00 annual)

Salary is commensurate with experience.

 

Position Summary

Journey-level, skilled trades worker responsible for the full range of skilled electrical work including the installation, maintenance, modification and repair of electrical apparatuses, equipment and systems.

Incumbents inspect, isolate, troubleshoot and repair electrical malfunctions using various test instruments; operate electrical power - generating plants and other electrical equipment and systems; maintain and repair low voltage systems including fire, alarm and access systems; test electrical equipment for safety and efficiency; plan the layout and wiring of new or remodeled installations; fabricate electrical parts; perform incidental welding as necessary to complete electrical work; advise in the selection and storage of electrical equipment; inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations; inspect related work performed by contractors; estimate cost, time and materials for electrical projects; participate in the maintenance and operations of an electrical shop; clean, maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties; perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures; maintain a safe and clean work environment; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; and consult and work with other trades workers. Work may involve exposure to hazardous materials.

 

Position Information

  • Troubleshoot and Repair
    • Inspects, isolates, troubleshoots and repairs electrical malfunctions using various test instruments.
    • Maintains, repairs and replaces lighting fixtures, equipment and systems.
    • Maintains and repairs low voltage systems including fire, alarm and access systems.
    • Maintains, inspects and repairs high voltage (12 KV) distribution systems.
    • Operates electrical power-generating plants and other electrical equipment and systems.
    • Tests electrical equipment for safety and efficiency.

  • Planning and Inspection
    • Plans the layout and wiring of new or remodeled installations.
    • Advises in the selection and installation of electrical equipment.
    • Estimates cost, time and materials for electrical projects.
    • Inspects completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations.
    • Inspects related work performed by contractors.

  • Maintenance and Recordkeeping
    • Provides instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.
    • Participates in the housekeeping, maintenance and operations of an electrical shop.

  • Other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications

Under general supervision, incumbents in this classification perform the full range of skilled journey-level electrical and related work as outlined in the series overview. Incumbents in this classification also may provide instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge: Work requires thorough knowledge of electrical theory and the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the electrical trade for the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical apparatuses, equipment and systems; and a thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal codes and regulations pertaining to the electrical trade, including the National Electric Code and Electrical Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California.

Abilities: Must be able to assemble, install, maintain and repair electrical apparatuses; operate all applicable tools and equipment necessary to perform skilled electrical work; read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; make rough sketches; estimate the cost, time and materials of electrical work; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver’s License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.

Experience: These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard electrician’s apprenticeship program.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Familiarity with Lockout/Tag out procedures
  2. Familiarity with lighting sensors and lighting controllers
  3. Familiarity with Simplex fire alarm systems
  4. Familiarity with card-key access systems
  5. Familiarity with clock systems
  6. Familiarity with motor controls
  7. Familiarity with high voltage power distribution systems
  8. Basic computer skills: email, printing, Word, navigating through Windows Operating System

 

Required License/Certification

  • Experience
    1. Must have minimum of 5 years' experience as a construction or maintenance electrician.

  • Licenses, Certificates
    1. Must have valid California Driver's License.
    2. Must have completed a 4 years Electrician apprenticeship program that is certified by State of California Department of Apprenticeship Standard, or equivalent 4-year training certification, and passed examination.
    3. Must have an Electricians license.

Environmental/Physical/Special

Considerable physical effort and intermittent exposure to inclement weather/working conditions; must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds; exposure to work environments that include; lack of adequate ventilation, cramped quarters, and toxic conditions; superior hand/eye coordination for manipulation tools; utilizes powerful hand, power, and machine tools.

Wears distinctive clothing, safety shoes, and personal protective equipment provided by the University at all times when in pay status.

 

Expectations Regarding Working Relationships and Conditions

A. Cleans, maintains and services work areas, materials, tools and equipment used in the performance of duties.

B. Performs all work in accordance with safety procedures, utilizing a wide variety of Personal Protective Equipment.

C. Maintains a safe, clean and organized work environment.

D. Maintains records and retrieves data related to work performed using manual and computerized record-keeping systems.

E. Prepares standard reports.

F. Consults and works with other trades workers.

G. Completes job tasks, related support tasks such as cleaning the shop, and emergency response assignments according to the priority in which they are assigned, understanding that specific duties can vary widely from task to task and day to day.

H. Works various days and shifts as assigned to meet operational requirements.

I. Coordinates work activities with other department trades and offices to achieve cooperative and effective work relationships and schedules.

J. Wears distinctive work clothing, protective clothing and shoes and safety equipment and devices to clearly identify campus employees to the public and to provide protection of employees and those around them.

K. Communicates with supervisor and colleagues in person and by radio to receive work assignments, communicate circumstances from remote sites and clarify work schedules, assignments and any obstacles or opportunities encountered.

L. Completes physical examination, conducted by the University, as required to participate in Respiratory and Hearing Protection Program.

M. Works at the Tiburon site and at other off-site locations, when requested.
