This Temporary appointment can be concluded prior to the stated temporary appointment end date, normally with a two-week notice period. Continuation of this temporary appointment is contingent upon grant funding.

Anticipated Hiring Range
$4,333.00 per month ($51,996.00 annually)
Salary is commensurate with experience.
Position Summary
This Research Technician will be under the supervision of the Principal Investigator. The incumbent will be responsible for but not limited to gathering, analyzing, compiling and synthesizing microbial ecology data for the DOE BRaVE Phage Foundry grant. The technician will be responsible for generating new experimental paradigms, be able to design controlled experiments, analyzing molecular data including computational tools associated with sequence information. In the research laboratory, independently conduct wastewater DNA/RNA extractions, and phage isolations as well as maintain knowledge of latest literature; and participate in group meetings to discuss findings. In addition, write scientific manuscripts and grants as well as carry out general lab duties, including purchasing, compile data and contribute to generation of publications.
Position Information
Microbiology laboratory analyses
- Prepare samples for analysis, In lab.
- Independently carry out phage isolations, and DNA/RNA extractions on environmental samples
General lab duties
- cleaning glassware, making up reagents, documenting chemical waste, record keeping and entering data, assistance with purchasing and log keeping
Data synthesis
- Enter raw data into analytical spreadsheets, prepare graphs of data, be able to write r-code for analyses and synthesis.
Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledges and Abilities:
Working knowledge of research techniques and the methods of preparation of research reports; working knowledge of statistical principles and procedures, including methods of frequency series, data, simple correlation methods, sampling techniques, and construction of index numbers.
Ability to assist in preparation of questionnaires, gathering and analyzing research data, and in compiling data for reports and summaries in tabular, graphic, and pictorial form; ability to prepare clear and concise reports; ability to analyze situations accurately and to adopt an effective course of action; ability to speak and write effectively.
Experience:
One year of experience in technical research or statistical work. One year of graduate study in the social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, public or business administration, or engineering fields may be substituted for the required experience.
Education:
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university, including or supplemented by a course in statistics. Additional experience which has demonstrated that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledges and abilities delineated above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
A background check (which may include: checks of employment records, education records, criminal records, civil records, motor vehicle records, professional licenses, and sex offender registries, as position requires). Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in a scientific area
- At least 1 years of experience working in the field, at sea and in chemical laboratory setting
- Have familiarity with nutrient analyses and mass spectrometry
- Have taken small boat training

- Must possess a valid driver’s license. Position may requires the use of state vehicles to attend events, visit off campus locations and fieldwork during work hours.
- Be able to stand for periods of time in lab and field.
- Be able to move research gear on and off vehicles, and heavy containers of water
- The work schedule for this position is flexible and may require work on weekends occasionally and early mornings
