Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Cloud Systems, Operations & Security Manager, the Linux Systems Administrator’s primary role is to support, maintain and innovate the Linux and Windows operating system platforms, along with providing similar-like support for several core applications and to assist others with the support of many constituent applications used across the organization.

This position will work closely with IRT teams, along with ITCs across campus to provide top-tier operating systems support and troubleshooting, to include resolution of day-to-day service requests and participation in projects and cross-functional teams to support university goals and objectives related to the administration of infrastructure systems and end-user applications.

FLSA: Exempt (Not eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $8,500 per month - $10,000 per month

CSU Classification Salary Range: $7,371 per month - $14,274 per month

Information Resources & Technology (IRT) partners with faculty, staff, and students to provide essential information technology services that support mission critical activities and innovative technology solutions that facilitate the accomplishment of strategic campus goals at Sacramento State.

Minimum Qualifications 

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in operating systems programs, maintenance, and systems administration features is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer science, mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent technical training and/or experience. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Operating Systems Analyst include a working knowledge of the assigned computer operating systems, systems analysis, and systems-level programming.

Required Qualifications 

  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in a relevant field or equivalent training and applied experience.

Demonstrated experience with:

  1. Deploying, configuring, operating and troubleshooting Red Hat, Ubuntu, and Windows servers.
  2. Linux scripting and programming languages (e.g. Bash, Perl, Python, SQL, JavaScript).
  3. Networking tools and protocols.
  4. Performance monitoring software.
  5. Linux configuration management tools like Ansible.
  6. Managing web servers, IIS, Apache and Tomcat.
  7. Vulnerability and patch management.
  8. Operating system security hardening.
  9. DBAs running Oracle databases in Linux environments.
  10. Configuring and managing Linux systems joined to Active Directory.

Ability to successfully pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications 

  1. Prior experience working in higher education.
  2. 5 years of experience as a Linux systems administrator.
  3. 3 years of experience as a Windows systems administrator.
  4. Strong experience working with Red Hat version 8+, Ubuntu version 22+, and Windows 2016+.
  5. Strong experience integrating Linux with Microsoft Active Directory.
  6. Strong experience deploying, configuring and using Ansible for Linux server configuration management.
  7. Strong experience with authentication systems like CAS, Shibboleth, SAML, DUO/MFA.
  8. Strong experience configuring, tuning, and troubleshooting Oracle databases on Linux in clustered or non-clustered environments.
  9. Strong experience leading IT projects while adhering to milestones, schedule and budget.
