About the Library:

The mission of the CSUN University Library is to provide collections, technology, services, information literacy instruction, spaces, and programming, guided by the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, and accessibility, in support of student success, research, scholarship, and innovation. As of 2022/23, over 18,000 students participate in formal library instruction and over 7,800 reference transactions are conducted annually. The Library's collections include over 859,000 volumes, 1.2 million electronic book titles, and subscriptions to more than 208,000 mostly electronic journals and serials. Physical and electronic media titles number over 185,800. Access is provided by a Unified Library Management System and over 230 online databases. Specialized service areas include a music and media center, assistive technology labs, special collections and archives, teacher curriculum center, map collection, and a maker space. About the Position:

The Interim Associate Dean reports to the Dean of the University Library and as the deputy to the Dean, assumes responsibility for the Library in the Dean’s absence. The Interim Associate Dean represents the Dean at campus and system-wide meetings as required and works as part of the Library’s administrative team to plan Library services, facilitate operations, and resolve issues.

The Interim Associate Dean is primarily responsible for Access Services, which includes the following service and service support areas: Guest Services (Circulation, Shelving, Automated Storage/Retrieval System; Interlibrary Loan); Teacher Curriculum Center/Music & Media; University Library Map Collection; Course Reserves & Curricular Resources. This position works closely with Library Faculty and Staff to ensure that the research and teaching needs of CSUN students, faculty, and staff are met and provides excellent customer service.  The Interim Associate Dean also manages policies and changes to existing public services, serves on various Library and University committees and creates special reports as needed.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages the Access Services units and their staff and student employees listed above, including serving as hiring manager, overseeing training and scheduling, and providing evaluations.
  • Practices and encourages empathetic and transparent communication, disruptive thinking, collaboration, and innovation; continuous learning and improvement; and sustainable practices.
  • Supports an environment in which library employees are guided by the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, and accessibility, in support of student success, research, scholarship, and innovation.
  • Serves as a member of the Library’s administrative team and advises the Dean on planning and policy issues.
  • Is responsible for the Library’s regular strategic planning process.
  • Provides leadership for excellence in customer service.
  • Initiates and implements special projects related to public services.
  • Identifies and resolves user issues.
  • Participates in security and emergency planning.
  • Oversees the collection and submission of statistics and other data for the annual ACRL Academic Library Trends and Statistics Survey.
  • Actively participates in Library Committees, including: Marketing Team, e-News Team, Space Team (Chair); Service Desk Supervisors (Chair); and University committees/groups, including: Associate Deans; Educational Policies Committee; Graduate Studies Committee.
  • Is responsible for routing Library for-credit course proposals through the curriculum review process and updates the Library’s administrative team on curricular changes that may impact Library collections and services.
  • Represents the Library at various campus and off-campus functions.
  • Serves as Administrator-in-Charge in the Dean’s absence.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Master's degree in information and/or library science from an ALA-accredited school, or equivalent degree if earned from outside the U.S. or Canada.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse groups.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, and accessibility.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with fiscal and human resources management.
  • Knowledge of technology applications in a library setting.  
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Highly organized with evidence of ability to prioritize workload demands, including meeting deadlines and managing several projects at one time.

 

Preferred:

  • Relevant administrative experience in an academic library.
  • Strong conflict resolution skills.
  • Record of networking and collaboration with a team and with a broader community.
  • Demonstrated commitment to employee development, recognition, and accountability to further operational goals.
  • Good public relations and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience leading diverse teams to support the operational mission and vision of employers by fostering an ethical, inclusive and collegial work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to support ongoing improvement through courageous, resilient, and catalytic leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience leading varying initiatives through a collaborative, service-oriented and communicative approach.

 

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule:

  • Salary is commensurate with knowledge, skills, and experience. The University offers excellent fringe benefits.
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $135,000 to $150,000 per year, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
