PURPOSE:
Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications and the day-to-day guidance of the Senior Brand and Marketing Specialist, the Jr. Marketing Specialist contributes to the execution of marketing, communication, and branding strategies for Cal State Monterey Bay. This position supports the production of digital and print content aligned with the university’s visual identity and brand voice.
Working with structured processes and templates, the incumbent helps design and deploy marketing materials across channels, assists with content creation, supports brand integrity, and contributes to the evaluation of marketing efforts. The specialist serves as a collaborative team member supporting CSUMB’s mission to provide accessible and student-centered education.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Marketing Content Development and Campaign Execution
- Writes, edits, and proofreads copy for a variety of platforms, including flyers, webpages, emails, and video scripts.
- Designs and produces print and digital collateral such as door hangers, flyers, and email graphics.
- Develops content for CSUMB’s Safe App and similar campaigns, tailoring messages to student audiences with a clear call to action.
- Assists in research and benchmarking to inform campaign strategy and platform selection.
- Collaborates with lead staff to storyboard, script, and produce promotional videos.
- Ensures all creative outputs meet university brand guidelines and accessibility standards, including closed captioning, alt-text, and Title II compliance.
Email, Web, and Platform Content Development
- Writes, edits, and builds HTML email campaigns.
- Designs and produces header graphics and selects imagery to support targeted messaging.
- Embeds video using and tests for cross-platform compatibility and accessibility.
- Uploads, segments, and manages email lists in accordance with communication policies and data privacy standards.
- Coordinates campaign scheduling and monitors email performance with lead staff.
- Drafts and edits content for web pages and interactive platforms such as Pathify.
- Builds pages using WYSIWYG editors and basic HTML, incorporating iframe-embedded media.
- Ensures digital content meets all accessibility requirements, including Title II compliance.
- Reviews web layout with UX/UI specialists to improve usability and engagement.
- Publish approved content and schedule app announcements to drive student engagement.
Social Media and Digital Engagement
- Coordinates with the university’s social media team to schedule and deploy content for multi-week campaigns, including posts, Reels, and stories.
- Captures original photos and short-form videos with mobile devices and edits them for publication, both on and off campus.
- Participates in content planning and provides input on platform-appropriate visuals, messaging, and student engagement tactics.
- Supports filming logistics, talent coordination, and post-production for social video, both on and off campus.
- Uses approved tools and brand templates to design and publish content that aligns with campaign goals and engagement metrics.
Other Functions:
- Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
- Assist with university events in a variety of roles, including operating a teleprompter, display screens, cue cards, or other complementary visual supports and production devices.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- General knowledge of marketing, branding, and/or communications, and/or public relations.
- General knowledge of applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to written materials, news media and confidentiality.
- Ability to appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information.
- General knowledge and understanding of media outlets including print, television, and radio.
- Ability to work with the media for the coverage of events.
- Skill in following guidelines and providing input and feedback.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively in a diverse environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Relevant education and/or experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis
SPECIALIZED SKILLS:
Demonstrated skill with spreadsheet, database, e-mail, social media, publication and multimedia presentation software. Technical fluency with Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google mail and calendaring programs. Demonstrates an expert skillset in various digital arts software programs including Adobe Creative Suite: Illustrator, Indesign, Photoshop, Acrobat. Advanced Skills in graphic creation, print design, and directing photography for publication purposes. Skilled in developing, coordinating, designing and implementing annual reports and other publications. Advanced skills in managing vendors, such as; mail houses, printers & photographers.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in a higher education, nonprofit organization or related environment with an emphasis on donor interaction. Experience in marketing and design coordination. Highly desirable: Working knowledge of Blackbaud software including Raiser’s Edge and NetCommunity, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, and Web CMS (TerminalFour). Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB’s Vision.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
