Position Summary:
Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President of External Relations, the Government and Community Relations Regional Officer is responsible for cultivating and maintaining strategic relationships with external stakeholders, including nonprofit organizations, the campus community, and may assist with local elected officials on behalf of the university. The incumbent designs and executes a range of initiatives that promote, elevate, and enhance the visibility of California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). The incumbent develops outreach strategies at both the local and regional levels, implementing engagement programs, partnership initiatives, special events, community meetings, and assists with government advocacy that align with university priorities and foster support among community leaders and other external partners. Additionally, the incumbent may inform the Vice President of University Advancement, the Associate Vice President of External Relations, and other university leadership on key issues, initiatives, and opportunities that advance CSUDH’s mission in the areas of community engagement and public outreach. In accordance with Assembly Bill 963 (2020), the incumbent will serve as the primary lead on the university's civic engagement committee and voter engagement activities. The incumbent will lead the university's voter engagement committee and work with systemwide plans for all major elections as the civic and voter empower coordinator for the campus.
This position will require occasional evenings, weekends, and travel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement community and government engagement activities that support university priorities by building partnerships with community organizations, nonprofit agencies, business organizations, and local government representatives.
- Coordinate engagement efforts with key regional partners and stakeholders in support of university initiatives and government relation activities; assists with government advocacy.
- Oversee coalitions of community, nonprofit, and business organizations around common interest areas with the university.
- Monitor community issues and stakeholder concerns, analyze potential impacts to university initiatives, and provide updates and recommendations to the AVP of External Relations.
- Gather and evaluate community feedback to identify emerging issues, inform outreach efforts, and support the development of engagement activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in public administration, political science, communications, public relations, business administration, or a related field.
- Experience: Five years of progressively responsible professional experience in government relations, community relations, public affairs, stakeholder engagement, or a related field. Experience should include building partnerships with external organizations, coordinating programs or initiatives, and researching or analyzing issues to develop recommendations.
- Valid CA Driver License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Extensive and in-depth knowledge of and ability to apply expertise in the advanced theories, principles, methods and practices associated with the functional specialty, program, and/or organizational unit, including applicable internal policies and procedures and pertinent laws and regulations.
- Laws and regulations are highly complex and require substantial judgment and discretion in interpreting and applying them to the specialty or program area.
- Substantial and broad knowledge of public and private entities including their organizational and operating structures, internal systems, and functional areas, as well as the impact of critical external entities on an organization.
- Ability to integrate and apply this knowledge to anticipate problems and assess the impact of proposed solutions on various organizational areas.
- Ability to interpret and integrate complex data and information to formulate appropriate courses of action which have broad and far reaching impact.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree from an accredited university.
- 6-7 years progressive work-related experience; previous experience at a university level.
- Knowledge of event management.
- Working knowledge of educational policy, experience in relationship building, cultivation, and stewardship; experience in community support building in greater LA County and in communities in and around CSUDH.
