PURPOSE:

Under the administrative oversight of the Associate Provost for Student Success and the general direction of the Director of Undergraduate Advising and Student Success, the Administrative Strategist III undertakes training, research, analytics, reporting, and development of assessment and evaluation efforts of considerable scope to advance CSUMB’s Success Framework with a special emphasis on the initiatives related to advising. The incumbent provides functional expertise related to advising and student success and serves in the capacity where the work centers on leadership and strategy and professional development: (1) develop assessments; (2) develop advising strategies and campaign efforts; and (3) develop and provide advising training across the campus. The incumbent’s primary responsibilities include supporting Undergraduate Studies Directors with identifying student populations using Otter Navigate advising technology that would benefit from advising interventions aimed at promoting student success, closing the equity gap, and increasing timely graduation.

The incumbent will coordinate advisor training for all new and continuing advisors, faculty, and staff. Develop, deliver, and evaluate training programs and workshops focused on strategies to improve effective advising approaches and techniques in accordance with national best practices, literature, e-advising tools, and Otter Navigate features. The incumbent will provide training support in various formats for administrators, professional advisors, and faculty in various departments; will prepare reports and materials for student onboarding and advisor training and will provide advising presentations and training during forums and workshops, as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:  

  1. Independently analyze and interpret student success data using EAB Navigate, PeopleSoft reports, and IAR dashboards to inform programmatic administration about operational needs and efficiencies.
  2. In collaboration with the Associate Provost for Student Success and the Director for the Center for Advising and Student Success, utilize qualitative and quantitative data to develop, recommend, and assess advising strategies and campaigns aligned with the University’s Student Success Framework and institutional priorities; prepare reports and recommendations regarding their effectiveness in promoting proactive, personalized advising, improving retention, and supporting timely graduation.
  3. Independently develop training materials and provide operational, analytical, and training support to advising leaders and partners.
  4. In collaboration with departments and enrollment management, use scheduling data to develop materials and schedule plans for students and advisors to support new-student registration.
  5. Independently provide operational, analytical, and training support to Undergraduate Studies Directors and advising partners.

Other Functions:

  1. Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:   

Extensive and in-depth knowledge of and ability to apply expertise in the advanced theories, principles, methods and practices associated with the functional specialty, program, and/or organizational unit, including applicable internal policies and procedures and pertinent laws and regulations. Laws and regulations are highly complex and require substantial judgment and discretion in interpreting and applying them to the specialty or program area.

Substantial and broad knowledge of public and private entities, including their organizational and operating structures, internal systems, and functional areas, as well as the impact of critical external entities on an organization. Ability to integrate and apply this knowledge to anticipate problems and assess the impact of proposed solutions on various organizational areas.

Ability to interpret and integrate complex data and information to formulate appropriate courses of action which have broad and far reaching impact; understand and analyze complex problems from a future-oriented and broad interactive perspective and readily develop proactive solutions that integrate strategic goals into tactical operations; effectively use applicable information systems and applications in analysis, research, and reporting activities and projects; effectively communicate with and influence high-level and diverse contacts inside and outside of the CSU system; effectively use all communication methods and formats and to use expertise, as well as persuasion and negotiation skills, to build consensus to achieve short- and long-term goals and objectives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

General knowledge and skills in the applicable administrative and/or program field with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS:

  • Proficiency with EAB Navigate and related student-success, advising, case-management, or early-alert technologies.
  • Survey development and analysis, as well as analysis of advising, retention, and graduation data.
  • Use of PeopleSoft, institutional research dashboards, and higher education reporting systems.
  • Ability to translate complex data into clear reports, recommendations, presentations, and communications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience developing, implementing, and evaluating advising strategies, campaigns, or student-success initiatives. Knowledge of proactive, personalized, and equity-minded advising practices.
  • Experience creating advisor training materials, facilitating training, and supporting professional development.
  • Experience conducting assessment, program evaluation, or outcomes research in a higher education setting.
  • Experience collaborating with academic departments, advising units, institutional research, and other campus stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects of considerable scope, prioritize competing responsibilities, and work independently with limited supervision.

  • This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority, will be required to participate in annual training, and to immediately forward to the Clery Compliance Officer all reports of Clery Act crimes brought to their attention.
  • May require evenings and/or occasional weekend work.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.  May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
