Job Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services, the Survivor Advocate provides emergency and ongoing advocacy, crisis response, and support services to students and employees impacted by sexual assault, domestic violence, intimate partner violence, and stalking. The position assesses individual needs, identifies appropriate referrals and courses of action, and assists individuals in navigating university, medical, legal, and community resources while coordinating prevention programming, outreach initiatives, and campus partnerships that support student well-being, safety, and success.

Responsibilities:

  • May accompany staff, faculty, and students to meetings with University Police, local law enforcement, Title IX and other meetings with University administrators related to the complaint, medical/counseling appointments and treatments, civil and criminal court appointments, and meetings regarding interim measures and remedies as needed.
  • Facilitates and assists staff, faculty, and students in writing civil and domestic violence restraining orders.
  • Act as an advisor during all stages of investigations, hearings, and other meetings with the Office of Student Conduct & Ethical Development.
  • Assists staff, faculty, and students in filing Victim Compensation paperwork.
  • Works with diverse student groups, organizations, academic and other campus departments regarding student health needs, issues, and problems.
  • Serves on campus-based sexual violence task force committees/teams.
  • With the leadership of the Title IX Office, collaborates to develop and provide campus-wide awareness and outreach activities, including activities highlighting social justice issues and their intersections with Sexual Assault (SA), Domestic Violence (DV) and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV).
  • Provides leadership in the dissemination of sexual violence prevention and awareness activities and programs.
  • Provides informational teaching and public speaking to academic classes, student clubs and organizations.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with campus departments and community members and organizations related to sexual violence issues, educational and advocacy programs.
  • Aids faculty on issues involving student SA/DV/IPV.
  • Maintains a close, collaborative relationship with local rape crisis and/or treatment centers to assure 24-hour coverage of services.
  • Develop survivor advocacy services annual goals and objectives for entire campus community, including staff, faculty, and students.
  • Annually review survivor advocacy services mission and ensure mission is in alignment with university mission, particularly around areas of social justice.
  • Develop learning and process outcomes and adopt or create assessments to measure program efficacy.
  • Coordinate, lead and advise services and programing with other staff who perform advocacy duties on campus.
  • Prepare monthly and annual reports as well as reports for any grant-funded activities.
  • Provides lead work direction to a team of student assistants providing peer education services and outreach programing.
  • Responsible for providing input into hiring selection, orienting new hires, training, scheduling, workflow planning, assigning work, providing input for reviews and monitoring work of student assistants..
  • Consults and advice in creation of job descriptions for students that reflect current duties and responsibilities.
  • Attending training to ensure proper processes are following for all hiring and lead work direction duties.
  • Provides work direction for the Student Assistant team, develops outreach event programming, and coordinates day-of-event operations, monitors all related operations for outreach, reviews and submits timesheets for students.
  • Works with federal work study to ensure that all processes are followed in accordance with current laws and restrictions.
  • Offers mentoring services to students that are interested in careers involving related services.
  • Serves on campus and system-wide committees and work groups and participate in relevant conferences and trainings to enhance services.
  • Perform other classification related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

• Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related.

Experience:

• Possession of these areas of knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent to four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising diverse students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.

A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

Required Qualifications:

The following knowledge and abilities as well as those listed at lower levels in the Student Services Professional series are required for appointment to this classification.

Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures, and practices of the program area to which assigned or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge.

  • General knowledge of the policies, practices, and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned; general knowledge of the principles, problems, and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel and fiscal management; general knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods.
  • Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Advise diverse students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters.
  • Determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals and groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature.
  • Reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas.
  • Plan, coordinate, and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations.
  • Analyze and define complex organizational, policy or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions, and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of others and gauge relationships accordingly by considering issues of diversity, the variety of the interrelationships, motivations, and goals of the members of the organization served.
  • Establish and maintain effective, cooperative, and harmonious working relationships in circumstances which involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division, graduate course work, continuing education or professional development in diversity/multiculturalism, counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job related.

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $5,056 per month

CSU Classification Range: $6,320 - $9,014 per month 

Please note this position is an FTE of .80 with maximum working hours of 32 hours per week.

Position Information:

Work status: Part-time / Exempt / Temporary (up to one year with the possibility of further renewal)

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am – 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Conditions of Employment

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.  CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Drivers License Check

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Mandated Reporter

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Campus Security Authority

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) position under the federal Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. CSAs are responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act Crimes reported to them or that they witness. CSA training is required.
