The Department of Gender and Women’s Studies at CSUN emphasizes interdisciplinary, cross-cultural and transnational studies with a focus on gender. Our academic program includes course work in feminist theories, women and social movements, transnational feminisms, women of color feminisms, decolonial and postcolonial feminisms, women’s economic conditions in the context of globalization and development, productions of women in the media and literature, queer studies, women’s health and masculinity studies.

Position:

The Department of Gender and Women’s Studies at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of feminist environmental studies. We welcome scholars whose work approaches environmental justice through the lens of legal studies, public policy, science and technology studies (STS), critical race studies, ethnic studies, feminist studies, or related interdisciplinary fields. We seek a scholar whose teaching and scholarship applies feminist decolonial, intersectional and/or critical race approaches to the study of extractivist economies, climate crisis and ecological destruction, and/or environmental justice. Preference will be given to scholars whose work centers marginalized, racialized or global South communities including their experiences, epistemologies, and struggles around environmental inequality.  Community-engaged or applied scholarship is especially welcome.

In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, participation in assessment of student learning, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate may be required to teach on weekdays, evenings, weekends, and/or online and will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she/they is/are housed for recommending tenure and promotion. Given CSUN’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement in a diverse environment, the successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Gender and Women’s Studies, Environmental Studies, Science and Technology Studies, Public Policy, Legal Studies, Critical Race Studies, Ethnic Studies, or related fields.
  • Applicants must have earned their doctorate from an accredited institution by the start date.
  • Applicant must have College or University-level teaching experience in-person and/or online.
  • Applicants must provide evidence of research in feminist environmental justice studies, such as conference papers, peer reviewed articles, policy documents, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research focused on marginalized, racialized, or global South communities including their experiences, epistemologies, and struggles around environmental inequality. 
  • Evidence or clear potential for excellence in teaching general Gender and Women’s Studies courses and courses on Feminist Environmental Justice.
  • Evidence of effective engagement OR potential to engage with a diverse student body.
  • Experience using culturally responsive pedagogy that leads to equitable outcomes for all students.
  • Experience creating a student-centered learning environment.
  • Experience in or potential for adopting inclusive approaches to mentoring.

Responsibilities:

Faculty success at CSUN is measured by three criteria: teaching effectiveness; contributions to one's field of study; and service to the University and Community. The standard teaching assignment is 12 units (4 courses per semester). However, new faculty members in their first two years teach 9 units per semester (3 courses). Successful candidates should be able to teach courses offered by the Department. Faculty members are encouraged to develop new courses as needed by the Department.

Peer-reviewed publications are important for tenure and promotion, and CSUN faculty members can apply for competitive awards that provide course releases for research or fund travel for research. Presentations at academic conferences are supported with annual travel funds. Tenure-track faculty members participate in shared governance, usually in Department, College, and University committees and other service assignments.
