Major Duties

Under general supervision, the Athletics Groundsworker supports athletics pre-game and post-game activities for NCAA Division I athletic events and assists with the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields. The incumbent ensures athletic fields and surrounding areas are clean, safe, and professionally maintained for student-athletes and coaches.

• Performs general gardening work and maintains the grounds of CSUN’s athletics fields.
• Assists in the mowing, edging, preparation, and lining of athletic fields to meet NCAA standards.
• Helps prepare game fields by mowing and striping turf, servicing pitchers’ mounds and bullpens, adding infield mix, watering, and dragging infields to NCAA Division I standards.
• Operates grounds maintenance equipment (bunker rakes, tractors, mowers) and tools necessary for field preparation and upkeep.
• Ensures athletic fields and surrounding areas are clean, safe, and professionally maintained for student-athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• One (1) year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas, in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.
• Experience maintaining athletic fields, including turf care and field preparation, is preferred.
• LICENSE: CANDIDATE MUST POSSESS A VALID CALIFORNIA DRIVER’S LICENSE.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of landscape and athletic field maintenance, including mowing, edging, turf preparation, soil treatment, planting, fertilizing, watering, weed control, trimming, debris removal, irrigation systems, equipment care, chemical applications, safety procedures, and NCAA field preparation requirements.
• Ability to safely operate, inspect, and perform minor maintenance on grounds maintenance equipment and tools; identify and report hazards, malfunctions, property damage, and field maintenance needs; adapt to changing assignments; and work cooperatively to support athletic events, special projects, and clean, safe, professionally maintained grounds.
• Knowledge of the safe operating procedures, applications, and basic maintenance requirements for pick-up trucks, carts, tractors, aerators, dump trailers, turf de-thatchers, ride-on mowers, sod cutters, trenchers, bunker rakes, compactors, and specialized athletic turf renovation equipment.
• Ability to operate and transport equipment safely; perform sod replacement, aeration, seasonal dethatching, in-season and post-season field renovation, and other sports field improvements; provide clear work direction to unskilled assistants; and complete assignments accurately while maintaining safe, efficient, high-quality work practices.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

• The anticipated HIRING RANGE is $3461 – $4137 per month, dependent on qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $3461 - $4752 per month.
• HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Wednesday through Sunday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. May include evenings.
• This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period. 
• The individual hired for this role will physically work on-campus in Northridge. This is not a telecommute position.
