(Job #560415) Instructional Support Assistant II, Jewelry Lab Technician, CSU Classification Salary Range: $20.97 per hour – $30.54 per hour. Anticipated Hiring Salary: $20.97 per hour. Final salary placement is commensurate with experience, internal equity, and budget considerations. This is a temporary, intermittent hourly, non-benefitted, non-exempt position in the Department of Art and Film.

Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Art Department Chair and the Art
Department jewelry/small metals faculty, the incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Art Department jewelry/small metals studio and provides instructional support assistance to the Art Department jewelry/small metals faculty to meet student needs in the various jewelry/small metal courses.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Assists in the overall operations of the jewelry/small metals studio facility – 85%
• In conjunction with the Department Chair and the faculty instructing in the studio, ensures compliance with department, college, and university policy and procedures and develops, coordinates, implements, explains, evaluates, and revises practices in the studio as needed including developing safety procedures and PPE requirements for new and existing procedures.
• Assists faculty with curriculum development and demonstrations for students.
• Sets up studio for student and instructional use.
• Using specialized methods and techniques, prepares a variety of tools, equipment and supplies necessary for specific courses including developing or restructuring and maintaining the following inventories:

  1. Tools for student kits
  2. Materials for all studio processes (consumables - sandpaper, spray paint, pumice, etc.) and student materials (enamels, metals, waxes)
  3. Torch Inspections (leak checks, gas level monitoring and ordering, hose and flashback arrestor replacement schedule)
  4. Writing/updating all of the Shop Operating Procedures and getting them onto the Tech Training canvas as well as the safety binder.

• Maintains and monitors records of tools, equipment and supplies issued and returned by students.
• Maintains stock record of tools, equipment and supplies and ensures inventory is available for student instruction and use.
• Participates in purchasing and procuring tools, equipment and supplies, as directed by the faculty, including checking local sources for availability and price.
• Receives tools, equipment and supplies and ensures quality.
• Maintains stockroom in neat and orderly manner.
• Researches new tools and materials in the field and provides Department Chair and faculty with recommendations on pricing, supplier availability, maintenance schedules, safety protocols, waste disposal requirements, etc. to update facility to cleaner/safer materials and chemicals.
• Trains students on safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies and monitors student safety.
• Oversees proper storage of tools, equipment and supplies.
• Mixes and monitors necessary solutions and chemicals for use by faculty and students.
• Properly disposes materials and chemicals in compliance with all federal, state, and university guidelines.
• Moves containers of materials (up to 95 lbs.)
• Maintains all tools and equipment in the facility such as hand tools, rotary tools, torches, etching equipment, casting equipment, enameling equipment, bandsaw, belt sanders, drill press, grinder, hand drill, jigsaw, palm sander, other construction-related hand tools ensuring tools and equipment are functional by completing tasks such as, but not limited to, lubricating flex shafts, resurfacing kilns, resurfacing hammers and stakes, changing sanding belts and blades, oiling motorized equipment and replacing
belts, etc.).

• Identifies issues and performs construction, repair and maintenance on damaged tools and equipment.
• Research companies that repair or recreate parts for tools or equipment that are no longer made.

 

Oversees student assistant lab techs – 10%
• Sets work priorities and oversees scheduling of student assistant lab techs for open studio hours.
• Trains student assistant lab techs on how to open, close and monitor open studio hours.
• Instructs student assistant lab techs on how to maintain a safe and clean working environment.
• Instructs student assistants on time keeping and completion of time sheets and oversees timely completion of forms.
• Collects and submits student assistant lab tech time sheets to department office support staff for processing.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience

Equivalent to one year of experience performing support services for an instructional program and involving such activities as preparing, producing, repairing, dispensing or storing materials, supplies, and equipment.

OR

Equivalent to one year of experience in ordering, purchasing, accounting or in office work related to technical materials, supplies, or equipment or in an office which provided similar services to a technical function or unit may be substituted for six months of the experience.

OR

Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline in the specialty area to which assigned.
