Position Description

Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Assistant Vice Provost for International Programs, the Study Abroad Coordinator will serve as the main coordinator and liaison for the Solano campus, providing complex student study abroad advising and facilitating program development for faculty at both Solano and SLO campuses. This position serves as a primary point person for new departmental programs at Solano and SLO, as well as for shared initiatives within the California State University system. The coordinator acts as the primary campus coordinator for study abroad health, safety, and compliance, and oversees a suite of scholarships. 

This position coordinates and facilitates pre-departure/health and safety training for students for study away programs on both campuses. The position takes the lead in specific study abroad program areas, the incumbent provides general and program-specific study abroad advising, guides faculty and staff through new program development, supports marketing and outreach, risk management, orientations and re-entry, program assessment and event planning. As part of a collaborative team, the coordinator assists in standardizing pre-departure orientations for faculty-led and departmental programs, working to ensure Cal Poly’s orientation and re-entry programming (online and in person)  follows standards of good practice in international education to increase the intercultural competency and cultural humility of our students. This position performs complex Student Services professional work characterized by independent student advisement and guidance in individual and group settings, working actively and independently with Cal Poly faculty, staff, students, and campus offices. The Study Abroad Program Coordinator provides a high degree of judgment, resourcefulness, and professional skills and knowledge in study abroad, as well as a general understanding of the interrelationships and the need for coordinated action within the International Center. 

This is a 1-Year full-time temporary position and is eligible for full benefits, including medical, dental, vision and CalPERS retirement.

Department Summary

The primary mission of the Cal Poly International Center (CPIC) to provide leadership and coordination for international activities and programs and to serve as a catalyst for internationalization efforts at Cal Poly. The CPIC maintains administrative authority and university-wide oversight of international engagement and initiatives supported by the campus. The department is committed to providing equity and access to services and programs for the populations it serves, including students studying abroad and international students and scholars at Cal Poly. The CPIC provides support to campus efforts in internationalizing the curriculum and in creating global partnerships.  

Key Qualifications

  • Utilizing thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior, possess an excellent ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student related matters. 
  • Ability to independently and logically analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action while interpreting, communicating and applying policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions and make decisions while understanding implications to other program or service areas.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism, this includes the ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within diverse populations and backgrounds.

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience.
  • A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $66,480 - $73,872 per year

Classification Range: $66,480 - $94,716 per year

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
