PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Director of OtterCare and as a staff member of the Office of Student Life, the MSW Intern Supervisor & Care Coordinator performs highly complex case management duties such as direct support, risk assessment, internal/external referrals, outreach, training, education and documentation within various software systems. The caseload is in response to students struggling to provide for their basic needs who may be experiencing varying degrees of economic need and/or distress, including housing insecurity/homelessness, food insecurity/hunger, and other unforeseen circumstances that may be impacting their ability to be successful as a student. The Care Coordinator is responsible for the supervision of current  Masters of Social Work student interns.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following

MSW Intern Supervision and Development (40%)

  • Lead the recruitment, onboarding, and orientation of MSW interns in partnership with the CSUMB Masters of Social Work Department.
  • Assign intern caseloads based on skill level and educational objectives while ensuring compliance with CSUMB and CSWE field education standards.
  • Provide regular weekly individual and group supervision with a focus on integrating theory with practice.
  • Oversee and facilitate the completion and implementation of the Learning Agreement, ensuring alignment with the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) core competencies.
  • Mentor interns in demonstrating proficiency across all nine NASW competencies, including:
    • Ethical and professional behavior
    • Engagement with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities
    • Assessment of diverse clients and systems
    • Intervention strategies
    • Evaluation of practice outcomes
    • Policy practice for advocacy and justice
    • Advancement of human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice
    • Engagement in diversity and difference in practice
    • Professional use of supervision and consultation
  • Conduct mid-year and final evaluations using field rubrics in coordination with university liaisons.
  • Provide guidance to student interns on reflective journaling, research projects, and capstone assignments.
  • Foster a supportive learning environment that centers equity, trauma-informed care, and student development.

Direct Student Care Coordination 

  • Conduct 1:1 care coordination intake meetings with students experiencing basic needs challenges (e.g., housing insecurity, mental health concerns, food insecurity).
  • Provide referrals and advocacy for students to connect with campus and community-based services.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of care plans and case notes using documentation software.
  • Collaborate with campus departments including Counseling, Student Disability Resources, Health and Wellness Services, Athletics, and Affinity Spaces to coordinate individualized support for students.
  • Participate in and lead case review meetings to ensure wraparound support for students.
  • Support prevention-based education through workshops and outreach efforts focused on well-being and student success.

Other Functions:

  1. Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.

Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretive information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job- related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Experience:  Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.   A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:

Professional experience in case management, preferably higher ed, and using case management software such as Maxient.  One-year experience supervising student staff and /or graduate students.

Possess comprehensive knowledge of college student basic needs and how to support them from a trauma-informed perspective. Thorough knowledge of program development and implementation.

Ability to analyze and assess data and make appropriate adjustments: to make decisions and problem solve both collaboratively and independently in crisis-mode.

Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent student/finance information system; Microsoft Office Professional; Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar, Forms, etc.); 25Live; intranet drives; and internet browsers.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.  May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
