THE DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics functions as an integral part of the educational environment at Cal Poly Pomona. Its primary mission is to provide student-athletes with experiences that encourage their mental, physical, social and emotional development; enhance their capacity for working with others; and strengthen their decision making and leadership skills. The department also contributes to the campus community by conduction programs and presenting events in ways that effectively serve the public relations interests of the University and provide opportunities for entertainment and positive social interaction.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This position is not a HEERA Manager and does not have authority under HEERA.
  • For assigned sports; Coordinate media relations for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Write, edit and distribute media releases to various outlets. For assigned sports, the position will serve as the primary point of contact with coaching staffs, student-athletes, contacts at NCAA and CCAA office, communication with other Universities, athletic department personnel.
  • Establish relationships with on-campus and local media. Arrange and coordinate all media interviews for student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
  • Provide media relations training for student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
  • Prepare media notes and postseason summaries.
  • Responsible for selected game management for all home athletic events, including scheduling and supervision of game staff (scorekeeper, scoreboard operator, shot clock operator, announcer, computer statistician, substitution table (soccer only) game set-up, tickets, concessions, video production, play-by-play, public address announcer, video board, music)
  • For assigned sports; Oversee and update the department’s athletic website on a daily basis with competition previews, recaps and unique feature stories.
  • Team schedules, results, statistics, department information and bios. Help coordinate the student internship program.
  • Serve as the statistician for assigned sports.
  • Coordinate game day statistical operations and statistical reporting to numerous outlets.
  • Report statistics as required to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
  • Update and maintain all archived statistical materials on sports and individuals. Assist with the department’s Hall of Fame nomination and selection process.
  • Assist with the coordination of the department’s social media accounts including but not limited to; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other emerging social media platforms while designing content for distribution.
  • Provide social media training for student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
  • Assist with the coordination of all live stream broadcasts for soccer, volleyball, basketball and baseball.
  • Responsible for selected game management duties for home athletic events for assigned sports, including scheduling and supervision of game staff (Play by play, video, scorekeeper, scoreboard operator, shot clock operator, announcer, computer statistician, game set-up, photography). Provide training for game management staff.
  • Coordinate the administration and nomination for all academic and athletic awards and honors for CCAA, regional and national recognition.
  • Travel with teams in CCAA and NCAA postseason competition.
  • Travel to attend annual CCAA meeting. Attend athletic department staff meetings.
  • Support department and University special events and championship hosting opportunities. Organize, categorize and properly archive all photo and video clips.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Valid CA Drivers License and insurance
  • Working skills and knowledge of communications, media relations, and related roles.
  • Working knowledge of sports information principles and best practices, including statistical analysis and game-day operations. 
  • Demonstrated experience with digital media management tools and platforms, including content management systems, social media platforms, and photo/video editing software.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations related to sports information and media relations.
  • Experience in developing and implementing communication strategies and campaigns.
  • Ability to provide lead work direction to others.
  • Ability to summarize statistics as they relate to research or sports information.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of sports terminology for relevant sports.
  • Strong organizational skills to plan, organize, and manage multiple projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively and appropriately engage various stakeholders


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2 years of experience in collegiate sports information
  • Knowledge of Sidearm & NCAA Live stats platforms
  • Knowledge and proficiency in athletics based statistical programs and broadcast streaming
  • Proficient in social media platforms.

Education Code 89521 Requirements

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the CSUEU bargaining unit 9. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards website. The CSU Salary Schedule is located on the CSU Salary Schedule website. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $5,178 and maximum $7,543 per month. Please refer to the anticipated hiring range for the appropriate salary rate for this particular position.

University Driving Requirement

Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Driver’s license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3. Not have more than 3 DMV Points, if their license is Class C or, 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points, if their license is Class A, B, or C with endorsements.
