(Job #548465) Student Services Professional II, Academic Advisor for ITEPP, Salary Range: $5,083 - $7,228 monthly, Hiring Range: $5,083 - $5,338 monthly. This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, 12-month pay plan permanent position with a one-year probationary period in the Indian Tribal & Educational Personnel Program (ITEPP) Department. Position Summary:

Reporting to the Dean of Students under the Enrollment Management division and the ITEPP Coordinator (Lead), the Academic Co-Advisor of the Indian Tribal & Educational Personnel Program (ITEPP) the Native American Center for Academic Excellence provides an effective multifaceted culturally responsive approach to promoting student success. The Advisor utilizes an achievement model perspective, focusing on student success, to motivate and instill high expectation. Develops strategies to engage families in an attempt to leverage academic support. Assists students with reciprocity, connection and contribution to tribal communities. Facilitates and supports campus programming designed to assist students with social integration and the challenges that they face in a vastly different cultural environment.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Academic Mentoring, Advising & Retention Support – 40%

  1. Serves as an academic for ITEPP participants. Provides holistic and culturally specific approaches to individual and group training, access, and outreach.
  2. Delivers new student orientation and current student retention services in collaboration with academic departments, Admissions, Housing, Financial Aid, Registrar, EOP/SSS, Learning Center, Disabled Services, Financial Aid, etc.
  3. Assist students by developing strategies to create supportive relationships, meaningful connections, and authentic allies, on and off campus, in support of their educational and career goals.
  4. Provides supplemental academic advising, assisting students with course registration, degree audits (DARS), GPA monitoring, and understanding university graduation requirements.
  5. Connects students to campus resources such as tutoring, counseling, and financial aid services.
  6. Maintains confidential student advising notes and tracks student participation in program activities.

Graphic Design & Social Media Strategy and Management – 30%

  1. Designs professional, culturally relevant materials including brochures, event flyers, posters, newsletters, graduation announcements, and program branding using Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite.
  2. Develops visually compelling promotional materials that elevate the visibility of Native American student success and community events.
  3. Manages the ITEPP Cultural Resource Center’s visual identity, maintaining a collection of over 7,000 Native-focused print, audio, video, and digital resources.
  4. Produces high-quality digital content for presentations, conferences, classroom materials, and external outreach initiatives.
  5. Curates and manages ITEPP’s social media presence (e.g., Instagram, Facebook) to engage current students, alumni, and Tribal communities.
  6. Creates culturally relevant content that promotes ITEPP events, student achievements, support services, and Indigenous educational initiatives.
  7. Aligns social media branding and messaging with university standards while highlighting Native identity, belonging, and student success.

Events Support and Community Outreach – 20%

  1. Plans and delivers student recruitment presentations at local schools and conferences as directed (i.e., American Indian College Motivation Day, Success in Both Worlds Conference, UIHS Gathering of Native Americans (GONA).
  2. Participates on American Indian community education and scholarship committees as approved by the coordinator (lead).
  3. Assist ITEPP staff in coordinating, organizing, and implementing honoring activities.
  4. Supports event planning, logistics, vendor coordination, marketing, and on-site execution to ensure culturally affirming and student-centered experiences (Indigenous Peoples Week, Student of Color Welcome, California Indian Big Time & Social Gathering, All Native Graduation Ceremony, American Indian College Motivation Day, etc.)
  5. Collaborates with Tribal partners, campus departments, and student organizations to enhance event outreach, engagement, and impact.

Administrative and Reporting – 5%

  1. Collects narrative information and maintains sensitive and essential student files.

Other Duties as Assigned – 5%

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:

  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and activities of ITEPP management.
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques.
  • General knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
  • Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
  • Ability to obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews.
  • Ability to reason logically.
  • Ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
  • Ability to navigate programs such as Adobe Suite Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, Canva, etc.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse population. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Experience: Possession of the knowledge and abilities above is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience. 
  2. Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrated experience working with Native student populations.
  2. Specialized skill set in coordinating co-curricular programming and event planning with diverse student populations in a higher education setting.
  3. Working knowledge of and demonstrated understanding of Native American cultural values.
  4. Ability to manage and organize student files.
  5. General knowledge of Native education history and current trends.
  6. Demonstrated experience utilizing a lens of intersectionality with students.
  7. Understanding of ITEPP's procedures and activities; and the basic principles, practices and major trends of the Cultural Centers for Academic Excellence and Indian Natural Resources Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP+).
  8. General knowledge of the Council of American Indian Faculty & Staff (CAIFS).
