Job Summary 

The incumbent provides vision for CNSM student engagement and outreach programs, including Thrive Seminars, programming for first generation students, programming focused on career development and internship awareness, and CNSM outreach efforts to K-12 and community colleges.

The incumbent utilizes high degree of judgment, persuasiveness, imagination, and professional skills to collaborate with CNSM Associate Dean, Coordinator of Peer Learning, Coordinator of Advising, CNSM Staff Advisors, Undergraduate Faculty Advisors, CNSM Department Chairs CNSM Student Council, and other campus partners on developing data-driven student engagement efforts targeted towards ensuring academic success of CNSM majors and premajors.

Under general supervision, the incumbent will provide comprehensive academic advising to undergraduates in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics with particular emphasis on assigned caseload of pre-majors.  The incumbent will provide information about University policies, procedures and regulations to students; assist in the implementation and personal delivery of various academic advising programs/program information, workshops, and computer-based advising systems; and work on issues related to retention and progress of students.  This individual will participate in multiple college and university student success programs including but not limited to CNSM Showcase, Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration, Mandatory Freshman Advising, and CNSM Early Warning Advising Programs. The incumbent will utilize information collected via intrusive advising programs in evaluating and improving student engagement programming. The incumbent will promote the principles of “growth mindset” model and metacognitive learning strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • To provide comprehensive academic advising to CNSM general undergraduate population, using basic interviewing and counseling techniques, in one-to-one appointments, “quick questions,” and in workshop settings.
  • To collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate student data, reports, and/or documents for the CNSM Advising Center. This includes, but is not limited to, advising forms, degree progress reports, Education Advisory Board (EAB) data, CS Link reports, and student files.
  • Identify students at risk and prioritize those needing interventions and help.  Advise students on where to get assistance; help set up support groups.
  • Work with CNSM college and campus partners to use data available (using tools such as Beach Connect (EAB), waitlists, tags, reports from Academic Advising Center; Beach XP Learning Communities, Deans Office and Departments) to design and asses student engagement programming. Communicate with college and campus partners to gain knowledge of student opportunities for CNSM students. Establish relationships and collaborate with college and campus partners, to develop programming targeted towards CNSM student engagement.
  • To maintain cooperative and working relationships with academic departments, university services, programs, offices, and the University Center for Undergraduate Advising for the purpose of creating a seamless university advising environment.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.  Excellent critical thinking and interpersonal skills. Knowledge and understanding of undergraduate science and mathematics degree requirements and career pathways. Excellent technical and computer skills. Ability to analyze the causes of students’ problems through transcript examination and personal interviews and then provide appropriate academic and career counseling, recommendations, and/or referrals to assist students to succeed. Knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Ability to collect, organize, and analyze data in order to track student progress. Ability to develop, present, and modify/implement changes in academic advising to work seamlessly with changes introduced by the University’s registration, enrollment process, and degree requirements. Ability to initiate expeditious solutions to students’ problems associated with academic appeal, retention, probation, graduation, administrative reviews, etc. Ability to analyze the causes of students’ problems through transcript examination and personal interviews and then provide appropriate academic and career counseling, recommendations, and/or referrals to assist students to succeed.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields and three years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

Preferred:

  • Two years of experience in college-level academic advising and student services.
  • Master’s degree preferred and may substituted for one year of experience.

Physical Summary

  • Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects. (10 pounds or less).

Licenses / Certificates

Valid California Driver’s License.

Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,540 - $7,893 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
