Job title and description: Peer Educator
The Learning Commons invites students to apply for the Peer Educator position as a Peer Tutor or SI Leader. Peer Educators assist students with academic support in identified courses and are assigned one or more roles based on experiences and needs. A SI Leader is embedded in the class and facilitates weekly study sessions outside of class. Peer Tutors engage appointment-based sessions with a student or group of students for a specific class. Embedded Tutors engage in class activities while also providing drop-in tutoring outside of class. Drop-In Tutors are available by subject to support students who may drop-in without an appointment (Math Pathways and STEM Pals positions).
Job Description: • Provide academic assistance in the form of Peer Tutoring or Supplemental Instruction in identified courses. • Participate in professional development activities to improve skills, to continue to grow cultural competence, and reflections skills • Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, languages skills, and experiences • Work in a collaborative and interactive learning process with the students: using facilitating techniques, collaborative learning techniques, active listening skills, questioning strategies as the primary method to understand student needs, prior knowledge, skills, and monitor progress • Guide student participation, evaluate student performance, and provide appropriate feedback and encouragement • Provide strategies on how to learn through study strategies (i.e. time management, note- taking, text book reading, test taking) • Maintain neat, up to date, accurate and complete records, and help to maintain an orderly work environment. • Recognize primary role to help students learn and become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners. • Assist Lead Coordinator and SI Coordinator with outreach and marketing of program through campus events and mediums. • Assists Coordinators with recruitment of future Peer Educators. • Participate in program and session assessment activities. • Make appropriate referrals to other campus and community resources. • Regularly meet with Supervisor and Mentor for debriefing sessions.
SI Leaders - • Attend all class meetings of the selected course, take notes, and read all assigned material including texts and supplemental readings. • Plan and facilitate two to three (2-3) study sessions per week throughout the semester using strategies learned through the SIL training workshop. • Maintain contact throughout the semester with professor teaching the course.
Peer Tutors- Appointment Tutors: • Work closely with the Tutor Coordinator to implement learning support models to support students in an assigned tutoring course(s) and discuss learning challenges, strategies, and mid-semester support interventions. • Provide availability for students to schedule appointments (one-time/weekly recurring)
Math Embedded Tutors: • Attend all class meetings of the selected course, take notes, and read all assigned material including texts and supplemental readings. • Provide academic support outside of the class in the form of weekly drop in hours per week in the assigned Math course. • Maintain contact throughout the semester with professor teaching the course.
Math Drop In Tutors: • Work closely with the Math Pathways Graduate Assistant and/or Tutor Coordinator to implement learning support models to support students in an assigned Math course(s) and discuss learning challenges, strategies, and mid-semester support interventions. • Provide academic assistance in the form of weekly drop-in hours for students in the assigned Math course(s).
STEM Pals: • Provide academic assistance in the form of Drop In Peer Tutoring in identified courses in the Naraghi Commons. • Work in collaboration with the ASPIRE STEM Pals staff and mentors to provide to implement learning support students in STEM classes
Wage/Salary: $18.42
Hours per Week: 5-20
Location: Hybrid (L222/Online remote)
# of Openings: 30-40
