Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Director, Dreamer Resource Center, the Dreamer Resource Center Coordinator (Coordinator) is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, expansion, and evaluation of programs and services designed to make the dream of a college degree a reality for undocumented students and students with mixed-status families at Sacramento State. Programming and services align with the following three goals:  (1) provide access to higher education opportunities to undocumented high school, transfer and graduate students, and those with mixed-status families; (2) create a campus culture of knowledge and sensitivity to the issues faced by undocumented students and students with mixed-status families; and (3) increase retention and graduation of undocumented students and students with mixed-status families by addressing their unique academic, personal, and professional needs in a supportive and safe environment.   

In consultation with the Director, the Coordinator will create and implement programs and services related to student learning and development that align with the mission of Student Affairs; assist in the recruitment, development, enrichment, inclusion, retention, and student experiences of the Sacramento State undocumented and immigrant student population; serve as a liaison to various offices and programs across campus and to external and community partners with regard to undocumented and immigrant and other under-represented minority (URM) students at Sacramento State; assist with seeking and drafting grants for external funding and engaging in other fundraising efforts; and recruit, hire, and supervise student staff, interns, and/or fellows. The Coordinator is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships and partnerships within Sacramento State and the larger community to create and administer programs and services that support the retention and success of, and improve the campus climate for, undocumented and immigrant students.

FLSA: Exempt (not eligible for overtime)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,540 per month (Anticipated hiring rate is at the minimum of the classification salary range)

Minimum Qualifications 

Knowledge and Abilities:

The following knowledge and abilities as well as those listed at the lower levels in the Student Services Professional series are required for appointment into this classification. Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.

Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student‑related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.

Experience:

Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Education:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Required Qualifications 

Experience:

  1. Higher Education student services experience related to the assigned program area (e.g., advising, admissions, student programming, or development).
  2. Experience working with students from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, including students who may be considered to be “at promise”.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  1. Ability to independently prioritize, plan, and organize work in a fast-paced environment.
  2. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to provide direct programs and/or services to a diverse student population.
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
  4. Ability to compile, prepare, write, and review reports.
  5. Proficiency using standard office software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  6. Familiarity working with school-based record/data systems/software (example: PeopleSoft).
  7. Ability to understand, interpret, and apply moderately complex rules, regulations, and procedures.
  8. Proven skills and specialization in working with undocumented students and students with mixed-status families.
  9. Demonstrated ability to supervise and coordinate the work of student assistants and volunteers.
  10. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
  11. Ability to have access to a vehicle and travel as needed. 
  12. Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community.

Preferred Qualifications 

  1. Experience developing partnerships and cultivating collaborative working relationships with internal and external constituencies including local, state, and national organizations focused on serving undocumented and immigrant groups.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of college student development and pedagogical theories related to first-generation and students from under-served backgrounds.
  3. Demonstrated ability to identify and address the needs, experiences, and concerns of undocumented and students with mixed-status families.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of the services and resources available to undocumented students and immigrant communities.
  5. Familiarity with state and federal policies and political climate impacting undocumented students and students with mixed-status families.
  6. Familiarity with grant writing and fundraising processes and procedures.
  7. Demonstrated skill reading, analyzing, and explaining complex and detailed documents related to undocumented students, including federal and state law regulations.
  8. Fluent in Spanish and English.
