Position Description

 

Job Summary

The University Library’s Emerging Technology Lab Coordinator develops and manages resources, policies, and activities that pertain to emerging technologies in King Library, especially those connected with King Library’s Virtual Experiential Reality Lab (KLEVR Lab). The incumbent works with faculty, staff and students in the library and on campus to develop curriculum and programming for these areas. The incumbent also supports research and scholarly activities utilizing a variety of emerging and innovative technologies and participates in grant funded activities related to these areas. The incumbent develops policies and guidelines for the use of devices and lab; manages equipment and inventory, and provides advice on budget, purchasing of equipment, and space renovation in collaboration with SJSU IT and other library departments.

The Coordinator hires, schedules, trains and supervises student assistants, and monitors annual student assistant budget allocation and/or grant funding allocations for student research assistants.

This position contributes to the University Library’s commitment to bringing anti-racism practices into library services and operations by supporting strategic initiatives in this area and ensuring alignment with the library’s core values of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop hands-on activities and demonstrations that provide experiential learning and digital literacy opportunities for students in King Library’s emerging technology labs.
  • Continually develops and improves a suite of library services supporting curriculum, research, scholarship and creative activity that may include a variety of technology tools and platforms including GenAI, AR/VR, IoT, Robotics, etc.
  • Collaborates with researchers and scholars to devise and implement research plans utilizing emerging technologies and resources available from King Library.
  • Collaborates with colleagues to support inclusion of library technologies in classroom curriculum, assignments, and projects.
  • Collaborates with Library Marketing Team, User Engagement Librarian, Technology Training Coordinator and other colleagues to plan programming and outreach events that highlight technology related spaces and services
  • Performs periodic needs assessment and environmental scans to apply new technologies based on user input and data-driven decision making. Advises and oversees the installation, configuration, and modification of equipment and associated software for labs.
  • Hires, trains, and mentors SJSU student assistants that provide services in a variety of technology labs. Fosters a collaborative and educational work environment while maintaining productivity.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Expertise in one more emerging technologies including: Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), 3D capture, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), Robotics and/or other emerging technology.
  • Knowledge of relevant technology tools and platforms supporting education, research, scholarship and creative activity, and understanding of how to integrate those technologies into education curricula.
  • Knowledge of lab equipment, installation, configuration, and modification processes.
  • Ability to design engaging, hands-on learning experiences that integrate emerging technologies.
  • Ability to assess and implement new technologies based on user needs, future trends and data-driven insights.
  • Effective project management skills to handle the planning and implementation of outreach events, technology programs, research projects and curriculum activities.
  • Ability to effectively hire, schedule, supervise and mentor student employees, fostering a collaborative and educational work environment.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study.
  • Three years of experience supporting information systems and technology.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education, library or academic environment.
  • Expertise in emerging technologies such as Virtual and Augmented Reality, Generative Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Internet of Things, etc.
  • Experience designing hands-on training or curriculum for technology products or platforms.

 

Compensation

Classification: Information Technology Consultant - Career
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,789/month - $6,725/month
CSU Salary Range: $5,158/month - $12,730/month
