Job Summary

The Academic Advisor, under the direct supervision of the Associate or Director of the College of Liberal Arts Advising Center (ATLAS) and/or the direct observation of an experienced ATLAS advisor develops effective advising techniques, learns university requirements and policies, and advises undergraduate students regarding graduation requirements and major/minor programs in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA). The Academic Advisor provides critical support for programs and initiatives designed to strengthen the academic success and retention of all CLA students.

Key Responsibilities

  • Under some/as needed supervision or observation, the academic advisor advises prospective and current College of Liberal Arts students about academic/major/minor requirements.
  • Under supervision or observation, the academic advisor further develops effective advising techniques and learns university requirements and policies. 
  • The academic advisor provides support for data collection, development of student academic profiles, and essential case management of college/university graduation initiatives.
  • The academic advisor performs other duties as assigned in relation to high impact practices and student success.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Ability to learn and apply current principles and practices used in academic advising, retention programs/services, and student success initiatives. Advise and counsel students with knowledge of the General Education/Major curriculum and registration systems used at CSULB. Ability to provide support for data collection, development of student academic profiles, and essential case management of college/university graduation initiatives. Ability to operate as a team member of a high traffic; high demand student-centered office/program. Ability to effectively use and operate computer systems/platforms,

E-mail, Internet, and university CMS/E-advising systems.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

• Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences, public, or business administration, or job-related field and one year of directly related experience required.

• Demonstrated academic advising experience in a college setting, preferred. 

Physical Summary

  • Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects. (10 pounds or less).

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $4,482 - $6,342 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

Additional Information

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment.
