Position Summary

The Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Department Clinical and Practicum Coordinator is a fulltime staff position who will serve as the main point of contact for arranging on- and off-campus placements for graduate and undergraduate student practica each semester.

Position Information

The Coordinator will be available on-site to support on-campus clinical education in the Nicholas Certo Speech, Language and Hearing Clinic at San Francisco State University.

The Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the on-campus clinical education portion of the speech-language pathology (SLP) curriculum, including:

  • Overseeing student clinical assignments, enrollment, orientation, advising;
  • Working with the department chair to ensure proper staffing of clinical instructors and to provide ongoing support to clinical instructors;
  • Communicate with and address the needs of clients and their families;
  • Overseeing facility setup, equipment, materials, and supplies for clinical training;
  • Overseeing documentation of students’ clinical progress for state SLP Licensing, SLP Services Credential, and ASHA Certification and supporting at-risk student clinicians;
  • Support Scottish Rite grant-funded initiatives to expand access to clinical services for pediatric  clients in the community

The Coordinator works with off-campus practica site administrators and SLP mentors/clinical supervisors to maintain positive site-university relationships, including:

  • The Coordinator will support the maintenance of the quantity, quality, and variety of practicum placement sites and qualified SLP supervisors to meet students’ needs.
  • The Coordinator will ensure SFSU remains a high priority for partner practicum sites, which include, but are not limited to, school districts, hospitals, and private clinics.
  • The Coordinator orients candidates to the practicum placement process, reviews candidates’ eligibility to begin the practicum experience, disseminates resumes, arranges interviews, and responds to questions from candidates.
  • The Coordinator will liaison with practicum site personnel, faculty, and other San Francisco State University staff for the purpose of internship coordination.
  • The position will require someone who is adept at written and verbal communication and well-versed in communicating with students and practicum site partners.
  • Work with the Associate Dean’s office to monitor, maintain, and establish MOUs for practica with community partners for student internships.
  • Coordinates faculty site visits.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:

The following knowledge and abilities as well as those listed at the lower levels in the Student Services Professional series are required for appointment into this classification. Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.  General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned.  Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student‑related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature;  interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.

Experience:  Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree or Doctorate in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences or Related Fields.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) awarded by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association.
  • Valid Speech-Language Pathology license from the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ post-graduate clinical experience and minimum of two (2) years’ experience with clinical supervision of graduate students, clinical fellows, and/or speech-language pathology assistants.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in communicating and working effectively with a diverse student, staff, faculty, and campus community are essential.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate an understanding of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion policies and practices of the Graduate College of Education and Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at San Francisco State University.

Required/Lisense/Certification
