Position
The School of Music invites applications for a tenure‐track position as Assistant Professor of Musicology. College- or university-level teaching experience, including undergraduate music major music history survey courses, is required. Applicants must be conversant with emerging musicological research and teaching methods. We seek applicants who will help sustain and develop our music history courses; who can help the School of Music expand its general education offerings; who have experience with diverse traditions and communities; and who are interested in and/or experienced with teaching large general education music courses in person and in online instruction. The successful candidate’s research area will complement our faculty’s existing strengths.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate music major music history survey courses, graduate musicology seminars, general education music history classes, and other academic music classes as assigned and based on the candidate’s qualifications. The successful candidate will have an established record of college- or university-level teaching and peer-reviewed publications; will supervise undergraduate and graduate musicology theses; and will share in departmental responsibilities, including student advisement and service on committees. Applicants must have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, peer-reviewed research, and professional and university service, all of which are required to earn tenure and promotion.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in musicology.
- Demonstrated teaching effectiveness (for example, via course syllabi, student and peer evaluations, and other evidence).
- Successful college- or university-level music history teaching experience as instructor of record.
- Peer-reviewed publication history indicative of strong potential for tenure and promotion.
- Experience in and commitment to teaching and/or mentoring members of historically underrepresented groups in higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching and research experience engaging diverse musical traditions, including global, popular, and historically grounded repertoires.
- Demonstrated familiarity with emerging musicological research and teaching methods.
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse student populations and fostering a collaborative and supportive classroom environment.
- Interested in and/or experienced with teaching large general education music courses.
- Interested in and/or experienced with online instruction, in addition to in-person instruction.

Compensation
The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $6,221 to $13,224 monthly (12 monthly payments per academic year). The anticipated hiring range is $6,884 to $7,022 per month.
Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm).
Summer research grants, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.

CSU Policies
The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083, revised July 21, 2017, as a condition of employment.
