The Department of Asian American Studies (ASAM) at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), invites applications for a tenure‐track position at the rank of Assistant or advanced Assistant Professor in Asian American Studies with an appointment to begin Fall 2027. The advanced rank will include up to two years of service credit (time counted toward the normal six-year probationary period).

Position
The Department of Asian American Studies at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with appointment to begin Fall 2027. We seek a teacher-scholar of ethnic studies or related fields with an emphasis in Asian American or Pacific Islander/Native Pacific studies.
CSUF faculty are committed teachers/scholars who bring research and creative discovery to life for students in classrooms, labs, studios, individually mentored projects, and faculty-student collaborations on papers and presentations. They teach broadly in the curricula of their departments, advise students, serve on departmental and university-wide committees, and engage in community work. The primary responsibilities of the person in this position will include the development and teaching of introductory and core courses in Asian American studies and ethnic studies and the development of courses in their area(s) of specialization. This faculty member will also be responsible for producing scholarship or creative work commensurate with the requirements for tenure. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in the broader university and disciplinary communities.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in ethnic studies, history, or related fields, with an emphasis in Asian American or Pacific Islander/Native Pacific studies, by the time of appointment.
- Ability to teach a wide range of Asian American studies and ethnic studies courses.
- Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in undergraduate teaching.
- Strong record of scholarly or creative accomplishments appropriate to the level of appointment.
- Demonstrated commitment to department/university, professional, and community service.
- Experience in working collaboratively with colleagues.
- Ability to balance excellent teaching, scholarship/creative activity, and service.
- Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with students from intersecting marginalized social groups.
Preferred Qualifications

- Transpacific studies.
- Critical Filipinx studies.
- Pacific Islander/Native Pacific studies.
- Critical SWANA (South West Asian North African) diaspora studies.

The College and Department
The mission of the Department of Asian American Studies is to realize the department's vision of achieving and sustaining social justice for all through creating knowledge, teaching, and serving our communities, with an emphasis on Asian and Pacific Islander American communities. The department goals are to promote study and research by, for, and about Asian and Pacific Islander Americans; to teach students about the experiences of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the US and in the world; to teach students critical thinking and communication skills; to prepare students for social and community engagement by providing opportunities to gain skills and organizational experiences; and to advance social justice for Asian and Pacific Islander Americans.
ASAM is housed within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the largest college within CSUF, offering 23 undergraduate degrees, 38 minors, and 15 graduate degrees. Our college mission is to educate students to be culturally, globally, socially, historically and environmentally astute, civically responsible graduates able to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world. ASAM often collaborates with the Department of African American Studies, the Department of Chicana/o Studies, the Asian American and Pacific Islander Faculty & Staff Association, the Asian Pacific American Resource Center, various student organizations including the Student Association for Asian American Studies, alumni, and various community-based organizations in Orange County.
Compensation
The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $6,221 to $13,224 monthly (12 monthly payments per academic year). The anticipated hiring range is $7,465 to $7,608 per month.
Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm).
Summer research grants, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.

New employees hired by the CSU for the first time who first become CalPERS members on or after July 1, 2017, are subject to a 10-year vesting period for retiree health and dental benefits.

The person holding this position is considered a “mandated reporter” under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083, revised July 21, 2017, as a condition of employment.
