DEPARTMENT SUMMARY

The Engineering Technology Department of the College of Engineering is comprised of roughly 150 undergraduates located at the Cal Poly Solano Campus in Vallejo, CA. The department offers two degree programs: Marine Engineering Technology (MET) focused on maritime propulsion systems and engineering with licensure pathways, and Facilities Engineering Technology (FET) focusing on industrial and facilities systems engineering ashore. Both programs are deeply rooted in "learning by doing", providing cadets with exceptional hands-on opportunities, whether at sea or in real-world facility contexts, preparing graduates for careers as licensed marine engineers or capable facility engineers in maritime and industrial sectors.

ABOUT CAL POLY MARITIME ACADEMY: Located on a compact but scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, California (30 miles northeast of San Francisco), Cal Poly Maritime Academy is a unique and specialized campus of the 23-campus system. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a part-time lecturer (non-tenure track position) in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Teaching assignments will be in fundamental or advanced mechanical engineering courses, maritime engineering, or other related areas.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field is required.

  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings is required. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • A graduate degree is preferred. Teaching and/or industrial experience is preferred.  Applicants with extensive industry experience, USCG licensures, and/or maritime experience are encouraged to apply.

  • Experience in working with broad range of populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment. Relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities.

SALARY COMPENSATIONInitial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. As of July 2024, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:

  • Lecturer A: $5,507-$6,677
  • Lecturer B: $6,221-$13,224
  • Lecturer C: $6,825-$14,523
  • Lecturer D: $8,593-$15,211

A full-time unit load for a lecturer is 15 teaching units, also called WTUs.  Part-time lecturers salary will be prorated based on unit load (WTUs).
