The CSU Chancellor's Office, located on the waterfront adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific in downtown Long Beach, is the headquarters for the nation's largest and most diverse system of higher education. Salary
The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $132,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Position Information
The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking an Assistant Director, Energy, Sustainability, and Transportation to be responsible for overseeing the administrative and programmatic elements of the ES&T unit, including revision of existing and development of new policies for climate action, energy efficiency, and climate resiliency. The position will develop and update associated guidance and procedures to implement comprehensive sustainable and climate resilient practices that support continuous improvement across all university operations. This includes creating and developing programs and platforms that support campus initiatives to implement, guide, manage, assess, benchmark, and monitor progress of the Board of Trustee’s sustainability policy that span across multiple, diverse areas of the university including but not limited to: Campus Operations and Maintenance, Campus Planning, Campus Construction, Campus Climate Impact Adaptation and Resiliency Planning, and foster strategic partnerships with Academics and Student Affairs and external partners for community engagement and regulatory compliance. Facilitate, coordinate, and provide guidance for all aspects of sustainable practices across the diverse campuses of the California State University System. The position will serve as the programmatic and administrative leader within ES&T to ensure extensive contracting and program development is on track and on target with the unit and CSU mission. Administrative responsibilities will include funding strategies, energy contracting, and shared services program. The position will also be the delegated authority over the ES&T unit in the chief’s absence.
This position is approved for telecommuting (two days telecommuting, three days in office (in-person)) with onsite work at the main headquarters located in Long Beach, California.
Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Chief of Energy, Sustainability and Transportation, the Assistant Director, Energy, Sustainability, and Transportation will:
-Oversee and administrate the Shared Services Energy and Sustainability Program including, supervision of program staff, deliverables, campus support, and strategic planning.
-Direct and lead the External Funding Program, serving as Principal Investigator/ Project Lead for grants and overseeing grant funding contracts and reporting as appropriate.
-Develop and oversee funding program to include philanthropy, loan opportunities, private investment, etc.
-Support the unit’s federal and state advocacy work as well as community partnerships with non-profit organizations, other higher education, local government and private sector.
-Co-Develop and lead the Scope 3 emissions program in partnership with program manager and unit chief with particular focus on STARS compliance and reporting.
-Serve as the unit’s delegated representative in Chief’s absence.
-Supervise unit staff in day-to-day project delegation, support annual evaluations and staff professional development, and personnel support.
-Provide Chief support and assistance in strategic planning, team development, and external outreach.
-Develop and lead long and short-term strategic plans.
-Develop and lead the implementation of the CSU Systemwide Climate Action and Adaptation plan and associated documents to improve integration of climate considerations across the university.
-Advance sustainable practices at the University by working directly with operational units, business affinity groups, academic departments, student organizations, senior and staff administrators, to coordinate and/ or enhance the CSU’s sustainability policies and initiatives.
-Review and provide guidance for sustainability projects and programs proposed by the campuses.
-Develop and manage systemwide solicitations and manage contracts related to sustainable university programs/projects; manage consultants and vendors.
-Develop policy and procedural changes needed to advance sustainability initiatives.
-Advocate on behalf of CSU campuses in programs such as AASHE-STARS, Second Nature Commitments, LEED, and other sustainability measurement and/ or monitoring programs.
-Oversee the development policy maintenance and updates for the CSU Sustainability Policy and the CSU Sustainability Report, analyzing past successes, current efforts, and future focus areas for improvement in sustainability performance.
-Working with Public Affairs as needed, publicize, promote, and communicate CSU’s sustainability efforts within and outside the campus community, including creating and delivering presentations, updating webpages, hosting and supporting sustainability events.
-Liaison between other units in CPDC, affinity groups, interagency external stakeholders, and strategic partnerships.
-Maintain CSU regulatory standing for climate action and resilience planning.
-Collaborate with Systemwide Emergency Management and Business Continuity.
-Delegate the development of toolkits, guidelines for implementation strategies through effective, cost- efficient streamlined processes using existing resources.
-Develop reports to the Board of Trustees on progress on sustainability goals and policy changes.
-Analyze data and develop reports on a regular and as needed basis.
-Incumbent performs other duties as assigned by the Manager.
Qualifications
This position requires:
-Must have a bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field such as natural resources, environmental studies, architecture, engineering, or liberal arts.
-Must have a minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in environmental or sustainability initiatives.
-Must have a graduate level degree in the sciences, sustainability, environment studies or related field.
-Must have 3 years’ experience administering and reporting in the AASHE Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Reporting System (STARS).
-Must have 3 years’ experience administering an energy management and/or utility program including, collecting and analyzing Energy Information System (EIS) data, tracking utility billing, and energy reporting.
-Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience supervising administrative staff.
-Must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience building, maintaining, and coordinating community partnerships and programs.
-Must have strong interpersonal and language skills for communicating policy and procedures in written or presentation format. Interaction with many different professional levels, both within CSU and external to CSU, is required, and the ability to handle sensitive issues and/or situations effectively.
-Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
-Ability to work on a team, build coalitions, and communicate effectively with a diverse community.
-Good public speaking skills.
-Possess leadership skills. Ability to facilitate productive group meetings.
-Ability to analyze costs and benefits of future and current programs.
-Ability to understand problems/ issues and work to facilitate resolution given competing interests and priorities.
-Familiarity with LEED certification standards and energy efficiency practices in new construction and existing buildings.
-Must have word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
-Ability to travel off-site as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
-Certified change management professional or similar certifications preferred.
