(Job #549985) Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Physician Assistant (PA), Salary Range:
$5,593 - $10,793; Hiring Range: $5,593 - $10,156. This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, 10/12 pay plan (work 10 months of the year with pay and benefits over 12 months) permanent position with a one-year probationary period in the Student Health & Wellbeing Services Department. Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Student Health & Wellbeing Services Executive Director and with lead oversight of the Medical Director, the Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant works independently according to specific established protocols and state regulations to perform a variety of duties associated with acute ambulatory care for students, which includes working in a busy acute care clinic as well as with scheduled appointments. The position should be proficient in providing Medication Based Abortion services and Gender Affirming Care or be willing to be trained to do so.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties: Direct Patient Care – 60%
- Provide primary and urgent care health services to eligible students at the Student Health Center through scheduled appointments and drop-in (same day) visits.
- Perform comprehensive physical examinations, including detailed medical histories using applicable clinical assessment skills & techniques and diagnostic tools.
- Respond to medical emergencies and perform life-saving procedures as indicated, following established clinical protocols.
- Order appropriate lab, radiology, and other tests; interpret diagnostic tests and examinations.
- Furnish and/or prescribe medications in compliance with applicable regulations using valid & appropriate documentation.
- Educate, instruct and counsel patients regarding medical problems, medications, treatment options, compliance with therapeutic regimes, family planning, emotional problems, preventive health care, and health maintenance.
- Render general medical and minor surgical care consistent with granted privileges and training.
- Refer patients for specialty consultation or continued care when services are beyond the scope of the Student Health Center.
- Develop and maintain clinical expertise in specialized areas of interest, such as Eating Disorders/Disordered Eating, Gender Affirming Care, Travel Medicine, or Substance Use Problems.
- Deliver Gender Affirming Care and Medication Abortion services (including becoming trained in these areas if not already proficient).
Clinical Duties, General Responsibilities – 30%
- Perform all clinical care according to relevant licensing and FNP or PA standards and following the policies and protocols of our university’s medical services.
- Diagnose and treat conditions that are within the scope of SHC’s services.
- Assume responsibility for ongoing care and management of patients from initial diagnosis through recovery.
- Accurately document (in a timely manner) clinical encounters, including patient history, physical findings, assessments, and treatment plans, in the medical record.
- Provide support / consultation to RNs and Clinical/Medical Assistant staff in the Gold area as needed; work at a high level of independent functioning.
- Make recommendations for improvements in clinic operation, including clinic protocols, to clinic manager as appropriate.
- Timely documentation of the exam, findings, assessment, and treatment plan for patients (and all other required records) within our EMR.
- Maintain clinical qualification and continuing education for licensure and comply with all necessary regulatory standards and licensure requirements mandated by Federal, State, and Local Agencies.
- Provide routine cross coverage in patient follow-up, such as medication refills or answering patient inquiries during the absence of other medical providers in a reciprocal manner.
- Participate in quality improvement (QI) studies and related clinical initiatives to support evidence-based practice and patient safety.
- Precept, mentor, and/or assist trainees such as students from the RN/BSN program, pre-health students, Medical Assistant trainees, or medical/NP residents, as applicable.
Other Administrative Tasks – 5%
- Serve on various SHWS committees, including search committees for new hires.
- Participate in peer review, provider meetings, consultation with physicians, case reviews & presentations, and in-house clinical training.
- Participate in the credentialing process.
- Ensure that the Executive Director is aware of significant clinical situations that may pose liability or safety risks.
- Complete CSU and SHWS required trainings.

Knowledge: Incumbents must be clinically competent and possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a FNP or PA in an urgent care setting.
FNP Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of advanced nursing and primary care principles, methods and procedures; thorough knowledge of medical theories, practices and protocols relative to the scope of practice, subject areas such as growth and development, pathophysiology, psychosocial assessment, pharmacology, nutrition, disease management, and the principles of health maintenance, applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to practice as a Nurse Practitioner; and general knowledge of effective supervisory principles and practices, if assigned lead work direction.
FNP Abilities: Possess the abilities and clinical competence required to work as a Nurse Practitioner including, but not limited to, the ability to work independently in assigned areas of practice established by the supervising physician; demonstrate clinical competence in eliciting patient histories, conducting examinations, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, assessing patient needs and making appropriate referrals; use clinical techniques and diagnostic tools; interpret laboratory and other test results; keep current with developments in the medical field pertinent to the incumbent’s scope of practice; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other health center staff; be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients; and, if assigned, provide lead work direction to specified health center support staff.

The FNP or PA must have the ability to effectively communicate with a diverse population.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP): Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program (master’s or doctorate course) or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Possess and maintain a valid California license as a registered nurse and a BRN certificate evidencing that the individual is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California BRN. Possess and maintain a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate (NP).
- Physician Assistant (PA): Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based physician assistant medical training program or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Possess and maintain a valid license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of California. Licensing by the Medical Board of California requires passing the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE). If delegated authority to transmit medications, incumbents must possess and maintain a valid California transmitting number. In addition, incumbents who have been delegated the authority to transmit specific controlled substances must also possess and maintain a valid DEA number and certificate.
- For either of the above: Possess and maintain a valid DEA number and certificate. Possess and maintain a CPR certificate.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Three years of general medical experience indicating clinical competence as an FNP or PA.
• Two or more years or its equivalent of increasingly responsible experience in the practice of a medical specialty (e.g., orthopedic issues, treatment of mental health issues, providing gender affirming care, etc.)
• One or more years of experience working in a university health center.
• Experience in using an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system.
