The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at CSUF has an impressive record of student success. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Chemistry and Biochemistry IT Consultant (Information Technology Consultant - Career). The Chemistry and Biochemistry IT Consultant is responsible and works relatively independently for delivering comprehensive IT support for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Involves imaging, deploying, and maintaining computer systems and peripheral devices and ensuring compliance with security standards. The IT Consultant provides ongoing technical support for faculty, staff, and special events, covering a broad range of hardware, software, and Audio Video (AV) technologies in labs, classrooms, and other learning or administrative environments. The IT Consultant also supports administrative functions including technology inventory management, software licensing, server maintenance, and documentation. Additionally, the IT Consultant contributes to the support of high-performance computing (HPC) environments, assisting researchers with application issues and ensuring system performance, reliability, and security. Collaborates with Natural Science and Mathematics computing staff, campus information technology, on computer related technical issues rollouts, refreshes and networks security repairs. Excellent problem-solving skills, strong communication abilities, and a commitment to user support and operational excellence are essential to this role. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications
|
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Information Systems, Telecommunications, Engineering, Engineering Technology or a related field plus two years of relevant full-time experience or the equivalent part-time experience. Eight years of relevant full-time experience or an associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and four years of relevant full-time experience may be substituted for the previously listed education and experience requirement.
Functional knowledge of the specialty area is demonstrated by an understanding and use of advanced principles and theories. Ability to integrate work related knowledge to address problems. Demonstrate competency in applying standard and non-standard technology applications and exploring and adapting to changing technology. Ability to independently apply technical judgment, recognize problems, use reasoning and logic to establish possible causes, interpret and apply theories and principles, generate alternative solutions, and implement a plan of action for the best resolution. Ability to develop solutions where precedents do not always exist. Ability to be proactive, anticipate outcomes and consequences of different approaches, and modify action plans. Demonstrate competence in interpreting and communicating information. Ability to use reflective listening skills when working with others. Ability to assist others in completing assignments and provides work direction and training to others on new skills and procedures. Ability to plan and work on shared projects.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Preferred Qualifications
|
Experience working in High Performance Computing (HPC) environments, including familiarity with Message Passing Interface (MPI)/OpenMPI, Simple Linux Utility for Resource Management (SLURM), and advanced Linux command-line interface (CLI) skills for computational tasks. Expertise in troubleshooting and supporting scientific instruments and applications in academic or research settings is highly valued. Proficiency in cloud infrastructure deployment and management, particularly in platforms like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Azure, is preferred, as is experience with virtualization technologies such as VMware. Knowledge of scripting languages like Shell scripting or Python for automation and system management tasks would be an asset.
Experience supporting audio-visual systems, including setup and troubleshooting in classrooms, labs, and conference rooms. Familiarity with IT service management frameworks such as Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is a plus, as well as experience in creating and delivering technical training materials and user documentation. Relevant certifications, including CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA), AWS Certified Solutions Architect, or Linux-based certifications, are strongly preferred. A demonstrated ability to work independently, solve complex problems, and effectively collaborate within a team environment is essential. Experience in educational or research technology settings is highly desirable, particularly in understanding the specific needs and challenges of these environments.
