The Department of First-Year & University Programs at California State University San Marcos seeks part-time lecturers for Fall 2024 to teach general and specialized sections of GEL 101: The Student, The University, The Community. This 3-unit course is a first-year seminar (college success course) that meets the CSU lower-division requirement in Area E “Lifelong Learning and Self-Development.” Candidates should have experience working directly with students.  

Course Description

Designed to equip students with the basic skills, concepts, and knowledge necessary to become a lifelong learner. Examination of current theory and research regarding the information age, health and wellness, career development, and psychological assessment. Practical application of the theory and research. Includes information literacy and technology skills, group and teamwork, and learning styles.

Minimum qualifications:

  • A master's degree
  • Demonstrated ability in working with students to facilitate their transition from high school to college. 
  • Per the California State University’s Out-of-State Employment Policy, the CSU is prohibited from hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside California. Working in the State of California is a condition of employment

Preferred qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in education, teaching and learning, instruction and curriculum development, or in the area of adult education.   
  • Previous college-level teaching experience. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students, particularly first-generation students, to facilitate their transition to the academic and social demands of college. 
  • Understanding of CSU undergraduate general education requirements and ability to direct/guide students toward the necessary information/resources for developing an academic plan and career goals. 
  • Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated expertise related to CSUSM’s Black Student Success Initiatives and/or expertise related to majors in the College of STEM, College of Business Administration, and the Sociology Department.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and/or intercultural competence with diverse groups in relation to teaching.

Salary commensurate with degree level and experience

  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $5,007 - $6,359 per full-time month
  • CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,007 - $12,594 per full-time month
