Job Summary

Within one of the nation’s most transformative universities, SJSU’s Student Wellness Center (SWC) fosters student opportunity in a revolutionary way by preparing students to maintain lifelong health and well-being. Physicians for the SWC contribute to the design, delivery, and quality enhancement of primary and specialty healthcare and wellness support to achieve this vision campus-wide. The Student Wellness Center provides limited psychiatric services for students which may include diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic psychiatric illness. The Psychiatrist is expected to obtain a detailed intake assessment, as well as to order any appropriate laboratory tests to support diagnostic evaluations. The Psychiatrist may, when appropriate, refer students to other practitioners within the SJSU Wellness Center or refer to community resources for more extensive follow-up and treatment. Receiving operational direction from the Lead Physician and reporting to the Health Services Director, the Student Wellness Center Psychiatrist works independently in performing assigned student services and consultations with SWC medical staff and counseling staff. Consultation could involve advice regarding psychiatric diagnostic treatment and psychotherapeutic activities and are in accordance with the overall operation of the SWC and within the scope of the program established by the Board of Trustees. All staff are expected to conform to CSU, State, and Federal regulations and laws. Although unlikely, there may be an occasion of brief evening or weekend work. Working collegially and collaboratively to support student success is the bottom line purpose of this and all SWC positions.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, diagnose, and treat acute and chronic psychiatric disorders
  • See patients on an appointment and triage basis, receiving referrals from, and consulting with Student Wellness Center (SWC) clinicians, counselors, and providers
  • Make appropriate referrals for concerns outside field of expertise and/or beyond the scope of the SWC services
  • Electronically record, complete, and chart patient records daily
  • Provide counseling and instruction for patients concerning stress management and other modalities for prevention of psychiatric illness
  • Provide counseling and instruction for patients concerning other health modalities, including sexual health education and counseling on the administration of medication abortion services
  • Participate in In-service training, AAAHC Accreditation, health education projects, and relevant department and campus-wide meetings

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of current and advanced principles of general psychiatry, including knowledge of available community resources and how to use them
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive intake case histories
  • Ability to quickly assess emergency psychiatric situations and provide the necessary prompt course of action
  • Demonstrated skills in diagnostic clinical decision-making and critical thinking
  • Demonstrated ability to provide accurate psychiatric diagnosis and treatment
  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform patient care in functional areas to which assigned
  • Working knowledge of ethics and standards of local and national medical associations and understanding local, state, and federal government regulations
  • Working knowledge of software applicable to this position, such as medical record and scheduling software
  • Skill in oral and written communication sufficient to communicate with both patients and colleagues; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports.
  • Possession of good customer service and public relations skills
  • Ability to effectively establish and maintain working relationships within a diverse multicultural population of students and staff in a university community
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others
  • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects
  • Ability to participate on medical staff committees as required

 

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from a medical school
  • License and Certification Requirements: Physicians - Specialty Services must possess* and maintain:
    • A valid license to practice medicine in the State of California.
    • Current board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) specialty or subspecialty appropriate for their assigned specialty duties
    • A valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances
    • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties
  • Completion of one or more residency programs and/or fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent in a specialty appropriate to their assigned specialty duties

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one (1) year practicing as a psychiatrist
  • Experience with college-aged (including teenage/young adult) health concerns and opportunities
  • Experience working within an integrated facility

 

Compensation

Classification: Physician – Specialty Services
Anticipated Hiring Range: $125/hour - $130/hour
CSU Salary Range: $79.22/hour - $154.19/hour
