(Job #547078) Health Educator, Health Educator: OhSNAP Coordinator, Salary Range: $4,789 - $9,244 monthly. Hiring Range: $4,789 - $5,029 monthly. This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, 12-month pay plan permanent position with a one-year probationary period in the Student Health & Wellbeing Services. Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the Lead for Clinical Health Education and Health-related Initiatives, and administrative oversight by the Executive Director, SHWS, the individual will serve as the Coordinator for our OhSNAP food pantry program. The position holds lead oversight of our OhSNAP student employees; provides outreach and education to students around food security and Cal Fresh applications and services; and manages the food pantry on campus. The position will work closely with the other health educators in developing, delivering, and/or evaluating multilayered health education programming, particularly in the areas of nutrition and harm reduction. 

The SHWS Operations Director will provide oversight of business and financial processes in relation to the OhSNAP pantry.  The incumbent will work on site at the university with occasional evening hours.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Outreach, Education, Campus Partnerships – 35%

  1. Provides outreach and education to students utilizing OhSNAP and/or with potential food security problems, helping to improve food security; dietary quality; and food safety behaviors
  2. Provides promotion of, and assistance with, Cal Fresh applications (which may include use of Benefits.cal)
  3. Works with local agencies, including food programs and health resources, to address student resource needs
  4. Serves as the point person on media communications related to the OhSNAP program
  5. Use of social media, website, and other technology platforms to address food insecurity and basic needs and wellness promotion
  6. Participates in relevant university and departmental committees, such as the Basic Needs Taskforce
  7. Collects and analyzes data to: evaluate and prioritize student needs, create programming to address these needs, and evaluate program effectiveness (through outcome measures) in order to improve future efforts
  8. Develop workshops around food justice and food sovereignty
  9. Collaborates with the Food Sovereignty Lab
  10. Coordinates cooking classes such as meals on a budget and creates recipes using items from Oh Snap
  11. Provides additional health education programming as time permits as a member of the broader health education team

Food Pantry, Grant, Budgetary Management – 35%

  1. Works on (prepares, implements, manages, assures compliance, evaluates) grants that are relevant to food security and funding the pantry
  2. Provides oversight of the OhSNAP budget, including tracking, budgetary planning, and expenditures
  3. Supervises OhSNAP groups and programs such as thrift pop-ups, cooking classes and food education, food deliveries, and communication
  4. Shops for OhSNAP food and basic needs supplies at local as well as on-line stores and works with Dining Services and/or other campus entities on food orders and deliveries
  5. Manages inventory and stocking; including coordination with campus partners (e.g., Dining Services)
  6. Coordinates food recovery programs, in concert with the Sustainability office, e.g., in relation to Campus Dining Services and other food sources
  7. Abides by, and assure compliance with, risk management protocols for assuring food safety within the OhSNAP food program

Lead for OhSNAP Student Assistants – 25%

  1. Coordinates the recruitment of student employees and volunteers
  2. Works closely with the lead for peer health education / check it  and the lead for clinical peer health education in onboarding all new student staff
  3. Provides training, oversight, direction, and evaluative feedback of the OhSNAP student staff, as well as scheduling their work and approving their timesheets
  4. Provides timely consultation and assistance to students staffing the pantry as issues arise
  5. Utilizes student staff in a manner that optimizes efficiencies in purchasing for, stocking, and managing, the pantry
  6. Serves as a role model for OhSNAP student employees and maintaining a professional demeanor

Other Duties as Assigned – 5%

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:

  • Thorough knowledge of health education theories, research, and program assessment.
  • Thorough knowledge of planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs.
  • Thorough knowledge of industry standards for the delivery of health education in higher education.
  • General knowledge of, or the ability to learn quickly, current and emerging college age student health problems and existing methods of intervention and control.
  • Working knowledge of the principles of educational and social psychology and how these apply to health education program.
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry standards and practices for health promotion such as those found in the American College Health Association’s “Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education.”
  • Ability to assess needs and establish or recommend program priorities and goals and develop plans to achieve goals.
  • Ability to collect, compile, chart, and analyze data pertinent to health education program planning.
  • Ability to plan, organize, conduct or oversee a variety of health education program and activities including discussion groups and workshops.
  • Ability to develop educational materials and media such as pamphlets, audio and video materials, and electronic media.
  • Ability to present ideas and information accurately, effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing; use computer and web-based information technology systems as a resource for research and providing health education programs; maintain confidentiality consistent with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, students, medical, and other health professionals, representatives of the news media, faculty, staff, and other community groups.
  • This position will occasionally require work in the evenings and weekends for outreach/workshops and presentations. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in an approved program in health education or a related field (such as social work, social sciences, nursing, etc.). 
  2. Equivalent to one to two years of progressively responsible health education experience or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  3. Valid California Class C Driver’s License, and the defensive driving training class which is provided within a week of start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree preferred.
  2. Prefer prior experience in a university setting and experience facilitating health education (e.g., nutrition, harm reduction) programming and coordinating efforts in a food service industry.  
  3. Experience coordinating a food pantry program is strongly desired.
  4. Ability to discuss difficult topics related to food security.
  5. Ability to engage students in thinking through their health-related behaviors.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse student body and to support leadership of students from all racial and ethnic backgrounds.
  7. Demonstrated skills in developing and facilitating a variety of educational methods designed to improve knowledge, skills, and behaviors, including presentations, workshops, trainings, individual behavior change sessions, and small group discussion/facilitation.
  8. Able to exercise creative initiative, develop and implement comprehensive work.
  9. Ability to select, train, direct, and evaluate student staff.
  10. Organizational skills to maintain accuracy and optimize efficiency of materials, information, projects, and records.
  11. Ability to use general office equipment, standard software programs, and audio/visual equipment, as well as to drive a small van or truck for the transportation of food and other materials.
