Position Description

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Senior Director of Employee Experience and Organization Development, the Benefits Coordinator plays a key role within the Benefits and Employee Services team, which is dedicated to providing employees with comprehensive benefits programs and employee services that contribute to an engaged and equitable experience for all employees. This position will contribute to the Benefits and Employee Services teams’ success by coordinating a variety of benefits-related actions including exceptional customer service, eligibility guidance, enrollment assistance and processing, issue resolution, auditing and reporting, and coordination of employee communications, events, webpages and activities.

Department Summary

The Human Resources (HR) department within University Personnel at Cal Poly leads workplace strategies that enable our approximately 3000 employees (staff, faculty and management) to thrive in their roles. Through traditional practices like recruitment, benefits, employee relations, information systems and performance management to strategic practices like professional development, organization development, workforce planning, and engagement, Human Resources is dedicated to cultivating the excellence of all employees.

Key Qualifications

1. Demonstrated working knowledge of the general practices of employee benefits administration. Ability to learn, interpret, and apply a wide variety of policies and procedures relating to and impacting employee benefits programs.

2. Demonstrated customer service skills, including a high level of diplomacy and professionalism. Ability to analyze and troubleshoot issues, using sound judgement and discretion when acting where precedence does not exist.

3. Demonstrated ability to act with diplomacy and tact when interacting with others while modeling and maintaining high ethical standards and confidentiality. Treats all with dignity, respect, and fairness, and earns trust through consistent alignment of words and actions.

4. Demonstrated skill in communicating effectively with all audiences, both verbally and in writing. Regularly solicits and actively listens to the diverse perspectives of others and incorporates new knowledge into thinking and actions. Communicates the truth with empathy, even when challenging or uncomfortable.

5. Demonstrated skill in planning and prioritizing work to meet deadlines and outcomes, providing clear direction and delegation as needed. Clearly communicates roles, expectations, and timelines in order to ensure goals and deadlines are consistently met with quality standards.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Five years of general office support experience. (Training at a vocational school or full-time college education may be substituted for two years of the required experience on the basis of one year of college education for six months experience.)

Salary and Benefits

Anticipated Hiring Range: $50,962 - $66,534 annually

Classification Range: $48,696 - $79,836 annually
