The Holistic Health Studies program at San Francisco State University seeks applicants for its part-time lecture faculty pool. The program provides students and the broader community with a deeper understanding of health and healing from a holistic perspective, integrating interdisciplinary ideas and practices from around the world. We seek individuals with a background in complementary and integrative health and wellness practices, preferably with experience in working with diverse and/or underserved populations in community, healthcare, education, or workplace settings.

Knowledge of scientific perspectives of the mind-body connection and stress reduction are valued as well as understandings of the philosophy, theory, and practices of traditional cultural healing modalities. Expertise in specific holistic health modalities can include mind-body practices, nutrition, herbalism, somatic/body-based therapies, nature and outdoor experiences, stress management, or other modalities with relevance to physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being and community health promotion. Expertise in health coaching, leadership, team building and/or collaboration practices are valued for courses involving health coaching and internship coordination. Media literacy education and the understanding of how social media and other social-cultural and environmental systems impact personal and collective health is also appreciated.

QUALIFICATIONS: Doctoral Degree preferred (PhD, DrPH, MD, DO, ND, DAOM) or equivalent) although master’s degree also considered. Relevant training may include a health science or related field such as public health, medical anthropology, health psychology, behavioral medicine, health coaching, holistic nursing, cultural and organizational studies, biology, religious studies, or licensure/training in a traditional medical system or integrative medicine school, or certification in healing modalities.

Evidence of a sensitivity to, understanding of, and the ability to manage the classroom environment and effectively provide instruction to college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and racial/ethnic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Recent college teaching experience.
2. Professional or educational experience in health coaching, social-media and/or media literacy training, eco-wellness, or community health promotion.
3. Professional experience working as part of a multidisciplinary health team in diverse community, healthcare, workplace, or similar type of organizations.
4. Willingness to engage with university faculty development resources to enhance equity, social justice and inclusion teaching practices.


CURRENT TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES: Undergraduate courses in one of the Holistic Health Studies emphasis areas: Western or Global Perspectives of Holistic Health. Courses may include:
• Stress Reduction and Relaxation
• Holistic Health Coaching and Internship
• Alternative Health Practices
• Global Perspectives of Holistic Health
• Other courses, as program needs develop
The mode of instruction is determined by the department to align with student and program needs. Instructors should be flexible teaching online or in person according to university guidelines and policies.


PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES: San Francisco State University supports faculty with professional development opportunities such as ongoing training through the Center for Equity and Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CEETL). The CEETL courses provide a systematic way to assure ongoing course quality and opportunities for new skill development in teaching courses in any learning mode, from in-person to online courses.

This is a CONTINUOUS recruitment for an applicant POOL to fill part-time, temporary, assignments on an as-needed basis, beginning Fall 2024 and Spring 2025. We will refer to the POOL of applications on file to fill assignments as the need arises. Part-time faculty applications are accepted year-round. Salary:

Lecturer A/2 Full-Time Equivalent Salary Range: $5,007 – $6,359 per month
Lecturer B/3 Full-Time Equivalent Salary Range: $5,925 – $12,594 per month
Lecturer C/4 Full-Time Equivalent Salary Range: $6,500 – $13,831 per month
Lecturer D/5 Full-Time Equivalent Salary Range: $8,184 – $14,487 per month

Anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank.
