San Francisco State University, Race and Resistance Studies Department in the School of Ethnic Studies offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning August 2020.

We seek a colleague whose teaching and research interests focus on innovative approaches to students success and closing the equity gap in higher education. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and service, to the excellence of the academic community.

The Department of Race and Resistance Studies is the newest department within the College of Ethnic Studies (founded in 2010 with formal departmental status granted in 2017). The mission of Race and Resistance Studies is to prepare students to think critically, nurture a social consciousness, actively engage with, and respond to community needs while developing leadership skills. It is our goal for RRS students to deepen their knowledge related to the multiple histories and cultures of communities of color within and outside the United States. To do so, Race and Resistance Studies utilizes an approach that is comparative and relational, interdisciplinary, intersectional, and centered in a praxis of resistance.

Currently, RRS houses a BA degree and four minors (Race and Resistance Studies, Queer Ethnic Studies, AMED: Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas, and Critical Pacific & Oceania Studies This position is a partnership with the Metro College Success program a campus-wide effort to increase equity in graduation. The College of Ethnic Studies, created fifty years ago, is the only College of Ethnic Studies in the nation. It emerged in response to the demands of students and community members for academic programs that address the experiences and needs of underserved communities in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The position includes a primary undergraduate teaching responsibility in the RRS Department’s undergraduate program and its partnership with Metro Academies College Success program. Responsibilities also include mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate students; teaching relevant courses in the RRS program; curriculum design; creating and sustaining professional development activities to support faculty teaching lower-division courses for historically underserved communities served by the Metro College Success program; developing an active ongoing scholarship program in one’s area of specialization, and ongoing committee and service assignments.

•Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Ethnic Studies or a related field such as Educational Equity
•Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students
•Evidence of excellence in teaching


•Potential in establishing a successful research program.
•Record of excellence in teaching and curriculum development for historically underrepresented students.
•Active record of scholarship in Ethnic Studies in areas such as educational equity, student retention and success, social justice education, analysis of root causes of social/political injustice and community engagement.
•Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and scholarship/creative works.
•Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically underserved communities.
•Ability to work collaboratively in program development and education research
•Evidence of external support or the potential for external funding of these activities.
•Record of collegial, supportive, and collaborative work relationships.

Rank and salary:

Assistant Professor. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The California State University (CSU) provides generous health, retirement and other benefits.
