(Job # 552985) Student Services Professional II, Field Coordinator, Salary Range: $5,083-$7,228; Hiring Range: $5,083 monthly.  Final salary placement is commensurate with experience, internal equity, and budget considerations. This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, 12-month pay plan, permanent position with a one-year probationary period in Outdoor Adventures. This position comes with a premium benefits package that includes

Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Campus Recreation, the Field Coordinator (SSP II) provides professional-level coordination and advising in support of outdoor and aquatic recreation programs, student staff development, and experiential education at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center (HBAC) and related campus facilities.

This position engages in direct student support through leadership training, supervision, and mentorship of student field staff, trip leaders, and instructional assistants. The Field Coordinator designs and facilitates applied learning experiences that promote student leadership, risk management competency, and transferable professional skills.

The incumbent also manages day-to-day operational elements—equipment, logistics, and program delivery—ensuring they align with student development goals, risk management standards, and departmental outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Staff Advising, Training, and Development – 30%

Plans and delivers leadership and technical skills training for student field staff, trip leaders, and rental assistants. Provides ongoing mentorship, performance feedback, and guidance on professional and risk management competencies. Advises students in balancing co-curricular learning and workplace expectations.

Program Coordination and Implementation – 25%

Coordinates logistics, schedules, and resources for outdoor and aquatic programs, ensuring safety, learning objectives, and compliance with University and CSU risk management standards. Collaborates with campus and community partners to develop educational recreation opportunities.

Student Supervision and Leadership Oversight – 20%

Provides lead direction to student assistants and trip leaders, delegating responsibilities and ensuring adherence to established safety, communication, and operational protocols. Facilitates reflection and evaluation sessions to reinforce student learning outcomes.

Equipment and Facility Operations Management – 15%

Oversees program and fleet equipment, inventory, and facility readiness. Engages student staff in maintaining and inspecting outdoor and aquatic gear as a learning tool for stewardship and responsibility.

Program Evaluation, Reporting, and Administration – 5%

Collects and analyzes data related to participation, learning outcomes, and operational effectiveness. Contributes to year-end reports, policy updates, and program improvements that support student engagement and retention.

Other Duties as Assigned – 5%

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:

  • Knowledge of student development theory and experiential education principles as applied to leadership and recreation programs.
  • Knowledge of outdoor and aquatic program operations, including risk management, participant readiness assessment, and emergency response planning.
  • Ability to interpret and apply CSU and Cal Poly Humboldt policies related to student employment, risk management, and co-curricular education.
  • Ability to advise, train, and evaluate student employees and leaders through structured feedback, mentoring, and reflection.
  • Ability to use initiative and independent judgment to plan, coordinate, and evaluate moderately complex student programs with limited supervision.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and apply data to improve student learning outcomes and operational effectiveness.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple program areas, manage logistics, and maintain attention to safety and educational outcomes simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with office and program management technologies, including databases, scheduling systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion, demonstrating cultural humility and the ability to mentor students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse population.

As related to the major responsibilities for this position:

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a CA Division of Boating & Waterways Safe Boating certification, CA Boater Card, as well as current CPR/First Aid.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in Recreation Administration, Outdoor Education, Kinesiology, Environmental Studies, Education, or a related behavioral science field.
  2. Experience: Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas (e.g., student development, campus recreation, outdoor education, or experiential learning). A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree in Recreation Administration, Outdoor or Experiential Education, Student Affairs, or a related field.
  2. Two or more years of experience developing and leading student training in outdoor, aquatic, or leadership programs.
  3. Wilderness First Responder (WFR), Wilderness First Aid (WFA), or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
  4. California Boater Card or U.S. Coast Guard-approved boating certification.
  5. American Canoe Association (ACA) Instructor Certification, US Sailing Association (USSA) Instructor Certification, and/or Whitewater Raft Guiding Certification
  6. CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor Certification
  7. Experience developing reflection-based or learning-outcome-driven training curricula.
