THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of English offers its diverse student population a rich array of courses in literature, language, creative writing, and composition. The B.A. in English fosters an understanding and appreciation of 1) the major works of British, American, and global literature, including works by and about ethnic and cultural minorities and women, 2) the history and structure of the English language, and 3) the aims and processes of creative and critical writing. In all its courses, the department helps students develop the advanced skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking necessary for successful careers.
The M. A. degree in English covers a range of periods, genres, and themes, and our program encourages students to participate in graduate student conferences and other professional arenas. Our students include high school teachers, those interested in community college teaching, creative writers, and others from a variety of professions who seek an enriching graduate-level experience. Some of our students apply for doctoral programs, and they benefit from the close relationships that they develop with our faculty. The other M.A. is in TESOL, a program that prepares students to teach adult-language learners and enrolls students from around the globe. Our 9 full-time faculty members are active scholars, creative writers, and passionate teachers.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The Department of English seeks a specialist in North-American literature and the environment with a strong background in eco-criticism and eco-humanities. The successful candidate will develop and teach courses in environmental literature and eco-criticism in the undergraduate and graduate program, and other coursework within the Department of English as assigned.
The successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty and students in English and across disciplines including those in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. In addition to teaching, all faculty are expected to sustain a record of scholarly work, advise majors, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and assume campus-wide committee responsibilities, including assessment of student learning. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord, and Online campuses.
RANK AND SALARY: Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.
DATE OF APPOINTMENT: September 2016
QUALIFICATIONS: Earned Ph.D. at time of appointment; a record of scholarship and of teaching pertaining to North American environmental literature; and a commitment to mentoring students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds are required. Expertise in one or more of the following fields: American or global literatures, North American Indian/First Nations writing, ecofeminism, composition and rhetoric, and creative nonfiction is required. Because this position is connected to an interdisciplinary group focused on infusing sustainability across the curriculum and across the campus, candidates whose research focuses on literatures associated with climate change, renewable energy, and/or public advocacy/activism are preferred.
