Description:
The Department of Design and Industry at San Francisco State University seeks candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Industrial Design to begin in Fall 2012, subject to financial ability. Qualifications: Terminal degree (MFA, PhD or equivalent) in Industrial Design, Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Design; Design for Manufacturing, or relevant disciplines; degree requirements must be completed by August 1, 2012. Minimum two years teaching experience required; industry experience highly desirable. Candidate should have strong, formal design experience and expertise with a technological focus. Candidate should have demonstrated competencies and experience with industrial design technologies such as computer-aided design (CAD) 3-D modeling and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) tools and technologies (e.g., CNC, rapid prototyping). Candidate should be able to apply these technologies to problems in design for manufacturing; automated manufacturing; and prototyping. Candidate should be able to integrate contemporary technologies into design coursework, and should have a solid grasp of materials and manufacturing techniques. Candidate should also demonstrate a holistic understanding of design methodology and process as an integral component in the successful fusion and delivery of human-centered design education, technology, and practice. Teaching Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities range from interdisciplinary foundation studio courses to advanced topic courses and graduate seminars. Together, these courses apply design manufacturing to a wide range of problems in design, including process, materials, manufacturing, 3-D CAD modeling, rapid-prototyping, and management theories and applications. Courses will require experience teaching product/industrial design, 3-D modeling, and computer aided manufacturing. Will advise undergraduate and graduate students on academic issues, creative works, and thesis projects. Additional responsibilities will include service to department and oversight of laboratory spaces. Salary and Benefits: Salary competitive, commensurate with qualifications. DAI offers an MA degree, an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts degree, BS degree in Product Design Development and a BS Degree in Visual Communications. There are approximately 500 undergraduates and 70+ graduate students in the department.
