The Department of African American Studies at California State University, Fullerton, is pleased to invite applications for a combined post-doctoral fellowship and tenure track Assistant Professorship in African American Studies.
This prestigious appointment is offered in collaboration with the Postdoctoral Partnership Initiative of the American Council of Learned Societies. The appointment will begin in Fall 2021 with a one-year post-doctoral fellowship as ACLS Visiting Faculty and continue in Fall 2022 with the tenure-track position. The first year of the tenure tack appointment will carry the title ACLS Distinguished Assistant Professor.

The Department of African American Studies at California State University, Fullerton invites applications for the combined position of Post-Doctoral Fellow and tenure-track Assistant Professor of African American Performance Studies with a focus on music. The appointment will begin in Fall 2021 with a one-year post-doctoral fellowship as ACLS Visiting Faculty and will continue in Fall 2022 with the tenure-track position. The first year of the tenure tack appointment will carry the title ACLS Distinguished Assistant Professor.
As the ACLS Visiting Professor and ACLS Distinguished Assistant Professor, the faculty member will receive additional support for research and travel, reduced teaching and service requirements, and the opportunity to work with the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellows program hosted by the College.
The appointed faculty member will be responsible for teaching performance, music appreciation, and other interdisciplinary courses to undergraduate majors; additional teaching responsibilities based upon applicant’s strengths and African American Studies’ Department needs; engaging in scholarly/creative activities leading to national visibility and contributing to a university vision on internationalization and interdisciplinary collaboration; advising African American Studies’ Department majors; and providing appropriate university service.
The successful candidate will be conversant with multi-disciplinary/interdisciplinary approaches to understanding African American performance and music in the United States and should be able to teach a broad range of courses, including introductory surveys of race and ethnicity in America, Intro to African American Studies, and upper division classes in her/his/their area of specialty. Positive tenure and promotion decisions require excellent teaching, research, peer-reviewed publication, and participation in the broader disciplinary community.

CSUF faculty are committed teacher/scholars who bring research and creative discovery to life for students in classrooms, labs, studios, and individually mentored projects. They teach broadly in the curricula of their departments, advise students, and serve on departmental and university-wide committees. The primary responsibilities of the person in this position will include the development and teaching of introductory and core courses in the discipline, and the development of courses in their area(s) of specialization. Specific courses that this person will teach include African American Music Appreciation, Blacks in Performing Arts, and Black Representations in Film. This person will also be responsible for producing scholarship / creative work commensurate with the requirements for tenure. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in the broader university and disciplinary communities.
• Ph.D. in African American Studies, Ethnic Studies, American Studies, Ethnomusicology, Performance Studies or a related field. ABDs must show evidence that the degree will be completed by the appointment date
• Specialization in African American Music and/or Performance Theory
• Demonstrated experience and interest in topics related to a broad historical view of African American cultural theory and social relations
• Evidence of successful teaching experience at the college or university level
• A strong record of scholarly accomplishments appropriate to the level of appointment
• Ability to balance excellent teaching, scholarship, and service
• Experience in working collaboratively with colleagues and community
• Demonstrated contributions to diversity through research, teaching, and service
• Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in undergraduate teaching of a very diverse student population, including first generation college students
• Experience in Comparative Ethnic Studies
• Familiarity with other performance subdisciplines (i.e. Theater, Film, and Dance).

The Department of African American Studies is an interdisciplinary intellectual community committed to advancing knowledge about Black people in the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and Africa. The department strives to interrogate the historical meanings and dimensions of slavery, colonialism, resistance, and freedom, and to explore their implications for contemporary political, social, and cultural expressions of Black identity. In addition to analyzing the impact of slavery and freedom on Black life in the Americas, we also examine the issues that continue to shape and define Black communities in the post-Civil Rights Era United States and the contemporary Africa diaspora, including: Black intra-racial dynamics, gender relations, marriage and family patterns, mixed raced identities, sexuality, expressive forms, and hip-hop culture.

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications and is subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases.
