Description: San Diego State University (SDSU) is seeking to fill The Fred Henry Chair of Life Sciences, which is an endowed professorship intended to allow the holder of the Chair to devote full time to research, primarily in the cardiovascular area. The scientist holding the Fred Henry Chair of Life Sciences will have state-of-the-art laboratory space in the San Diego State University Donald P. Shiley BioScience Center, a recently constructed facility that houses researchers focused on the interfaces among infection, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease. The SDSU Donald P. Shiley BioScience Center is the first multidisciplinary research center focused on the connection among these fields. The holder of the Fred Henry Chair of Life Sciences serves a research leadership role at SDSU, and will have a tenured faculty appointment in the SDSU Department of Biology.

Research Field: Cardiovascular

Examples of preferred research areas include, but are not limited to signal transduction in cardiovascular systems, cardiac physiology and pathology, immune interactions with the heart, microbial infections of the heart, and applications, such as cardioprotection and cardiac regeneration.

Evidence of sustained funding for individual research grants, and experience with multi-investigator research, equipment, and facilities grants
Experience with obtaining funding from private foundations

Ability to build, lead and oversee interdisciplinary research teams

Expectations: The successful candidate will:
◾be appointed as a tenured faculty member in the Department of Biology
◾be appointed as a full member of the SDSU Heart Institute
◾maintain a well-funded, internationally recognized research program
◾participate in graduate training programs (Ph.D. and M.S.)
◾be encouraged to develop collaborative relationships with the San Diego biotechnology industry
◾be expected to enhance collaboration with translational and clinical centers
◾participate with other faculty members to develop novel centers of excellence that will attract new faculty
◾collaborate with faculty members at SDSU, and other institutions, to develop new funded research initiatives and to respond creatively and rapidly to new national research funding opportunities in cardiovascular science

SDSU is seeking applicants with demonstrated experience in and/or commitment to teaching and working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups. The College of Sciences is host to a large number of federally-funded minority training programs (described at http://www.sci.sdsu.edu/casa/).
