Open Rank – Reading/Literacy Education
The College of Education invites applications for a tenure-track position (open rank). An earned doctorate in reading/literacy education or related discipline is required. Candidates must have demonstrated knowledge and skill sufficient for teaching both teacher credential and graduate level literacy-related courses. Candidates must be able to articulate a clear and strategic use of literacy across a variety of contexts, including online and offline reading and writing skills. Candidates should demonstrate a teaching and research program that features a coherent vision of literacy that aligns resources to support high academic expectations for student achievement; one that engages students, their families, and the community in the acquisition of literacy skills. Experience in online instruction and distributed learning is desirable. Proficiency in a second language is also desirable. All credential coursework focuses on the preparation of teachers for linguistically and culturally diverse students. Field supervision of student teachers and interns is expected. Advising students, scholarly and service activities related to the position are also components of the assignment. Minimum qualifications: 1) earned doctorate in a reading/literacy discipline represented among the departments and programs affiliated with the program, 2) knowledge of and experience with public school curricula K-12, instruction, classroom management, and assessment, 3) commitment to and/or expertise in communicating and collaborating with an ethnically, linguistically, and culturally diverse campus community, 4) evidence of potential for scholarly and/or creative activity appropriate to rank in reading/literacy, 5) qualified to teach courses in the graduate reading program and teacher education division. Preferred qualifications: 1) a minimum of three years of successful teaching/reading specialist experience in a K-12 public school, 2) experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse student populations, 3) experience with and/or knowledge of language arts curriculum, especially as it relates to English language learners, 4) experience in and knowledge of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment information (including performance based assessment) to identify students’ language proficiencies and to develop effective instruction that promotes students’ access to and achievement in the academic content standards (e.g. development of content and language objectives, flexible strategic grouping structure oral interaction.
