Open Rank - Bilingual Education and Biliteracy
The College of Education invites applications for a tenure-track position (open rank) in bilingual education and biliteracy. An earned doctorate in bilingual education or related discipline is required. Candidates must have demonstrated knowledge and skill sufficient for teaching both teacher credential and graduate level literacy-related courses. Candidates must be able to articulate a coherent vision of biliteracy that capitalizes on students’ multilingual skills, diverse knowledge, skills, abilities, and backgrounds; to implement curricula to meet academic standards in Spanish and English; be skilled in creating a positive, achievement-oriented learning environment; and be passionate about closing the achievement gap and ensuring that every child, regardless of background or circumstance, receives an excellent education. Experience in online instruction and distributed learning is desirable. Proficiency in Spanish is required; a teaching credential with bilingual authorization or California BCLAD is also required. All credential coursework focuses on the preparation of teachers for linguistically and culturally diverse students. Field supervision of student teachers and interns is expected. Advising students, scholarly and service activities related to the position are also components of the assignment. Minimum qualifications: 1) bilingual credential and experience in teaching in a bilingual school classroom, 2) knowledge of and experience with K-12 bilingual, dual immersion curricula, instruction, classroom management, and assessment, 3) commitment to and/or expertise in communicating and collaborating with an ethnically, linguistically, and culturally diverse campus community, 4) evidence of scholarly and/or creative activity appropriate to rank, related to bilingual and/ or dual immersion programs K-12. Preferred qualifications: 1) expertise in first- and second-language acquisition and the connection between home language literacy and second-language development, 2) knowledge of the language and literacy demands inherent in content-area instruction for English language learners (e.g., linguistic demands language function and form, audience and purpose, academic vocabulary, comprehension of multiple oral and written genres), 3) knowledge of how to apply appropriate pedagogical practices informed by sound theory and research that provide access to the core curriculum and lead to high achievement for English Learners.
