The successful candidate, with an expertise in Family Studies and experience in parent-child relationship across the lifespan within a contextual-developmental–relational framework will become a member of our faculty with teaching, research and service duties. The full-time appointment includes teaching undergraduate and graduate students preparing them to work with children, families and communities using interdisciplinary, contextual and lifespan lenses; leading and conducting research that is relevant to the field of family studies with the focus on parent-child relationship; and developing collaborative working relationships with the college, university and outside communities to engage students in applied hands-on learning experiences. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses including: Child, Family, and Community Engagement (CFD 272); Interactions in Culturally Diverse Families (CFD 335); Divorce and Remarriage (CFD 536); Public Policy and Professional Ethics in Child and Family Development (CFD 575); Family Involvement & Engagement with Young Children: Working with Families at Risk (CFD 585); Seminar in Family Processes (CFD 634).

Active and sustained involvement in professional growth beyond the university is expected, as is participation in appropriate faculty committees and governance. The candidate will have a commitment to relationship-based adult-child interactions and learning, and have extended experience with the field of Family Studies-with the emphasis on Parenting.


Doctorate in Family Studies with emphasis on parent-child preferred.
Extensive professional experience in the field of family studies and parent-child relationship.
Possesses current up-to-date knowledge especially as related to the new trends in the Family Studies, parenting and the understanding of working with and strengthening families.
Obtains the certification from the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) for Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) and is a member of NCFR.
Have exemplary teaching and research skills as supported by their former activities and achievements.
Has a record of successful experience working with child and family services, community agencies and partners, families, children, and students.
Demonstrated abilities to work with socially, culturally, and economically diverse groups of children and adults domestically and abroad.
Team player that has the skills to interact, network, and collaborate with professionals in the field, colleagues and students.
Assistant Professor appointment with salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

DEPARTMENT OF CHILD AND FAMILY DEVELOPMENT: he Department of Child and Family Development is a highly integrated academic unit within the College of Education. The Department offers a B.S. in Child Development in Applied Arts and Sciences and a Master of Science degree in Child Development, as well as a new graduate-level certificate program in Early Childhood Socio-Emotional & Behavioral Regulation Intervention. The SDSU Child and Family Development (CFD) Department’s mission is to prepare students to become professionals who work with children, families, schools and communities. The focus of the department is on the study of social emotional development as the underlying foundation for all other areas of development including physical, cognitive, motor and language. The program represents an interdisciplinary field of study with a basic assumption that development takes place across the lifespan in the context of the family, community, and public policy. The department’s emphasis on primary prevention prepares students with hands-on experiences through community-based learning. The department includes seven full-time and approximately twelve part-time faculty and serves a student body of between 400 to 500 undergraduate majors and 60-70 graduate students.
