San Diego State University, Department of Religious Studies invites applications for a tenure-track position at assistant professor rank in American Religious Diversity, with a specialization in any aspect of the religions and religious history of African Americans in North America, to begin Fall semester 2014. Research interests may combine the study of religion with other fields such as philosophy, social theory, literature, and the arts. Candidates working on Afro-Caribbean traditions, or other aspects of African-American religious experience are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will teach several core General Education courses including “American Religious Diversity,” “Religion and American Institutions,” in addition to courses in “Black Religion and Spirituality,” “Atheism, Humanism, and Secularism” and “Hip Hop and Religion.” The chosen candidate will show promise to teach other lower, upper, and cross-listed division courses, produce a well-planned research/scholarship agenda, whose interests will enhance existing strengths within a department known for its interdisciplinary and comparative approaches, will participate in professional organizations, collaborate with other college and university departments, serve the larger San Diego community, and complement the mission and collegiality of the Department of Religious Studies.

The successful candidate will have research expertise in American religious history and an ability to engage issues of theory and method in the academic study of religion and will have pedagogical skills in World Religions. Alongside their teaching of religious studies courses, the desired candidate will also be able to teach Africana Studies courses such as “Africana Intellectual Thought” and “African Foundations of Africana Studies” which are courses anchored in the African Diaspora experience. The area of specialization should include African American religious cultures and traditions, ethnography of religion, religion and race, religion and culture, and/or theological studies.

Qualifications include demonstrated skills in teaching undergraduates. Candidates must possess a strong commitment to teaching excellence and demonstrate promise for continuing research and publication. Ph.D. shall be in hand at time of appointment. Applicant screening will begin October 1, 2013.
