Position Summary*

The Associate Dean is second in line to the AVP/Dean in responsibility for all aspects of the College of Extended Learning and International Affairs (CELIA). As such, the Associate Dean is authorized to make a broad range of decisions and actions, in consultation with the AVP/Dean, necessary to carry out the mission of the College. At SF State, Associate Deans normally assume a primary role in the development and monitoring of the curriculum of their colleges. The Associate Dean of CELIA oversees the creation and approval process of all credit courses and programs offered through the College. The candidate participates with Associate Deans from the other colleges on the University Course Review Committee, which is the final clearinghouse for all new courses approved by the University. If necessary, the Associate Dean facilitates and participates in negotiations with other colleges to resolve curricular conflicts surrounding new and existing courses. In a related curricular responsibility, the Associate Dean is often the first point of contact with campus faculty members and other University leaders in the development of new curriculum and special projects to be offered through CELIA. The Associate Dean works with individuals from all departments across the University to flesh out ideas for innovative curses and programs. Knowledge of SF State and CSU system-wide approval procedures is essential to bring ideas from conception to reality in an efficient manner. Additionally, the Associate Dean supervises program developers and directors who are directly responsible for designated program areas. Program administration for these areas covers a wide range of responsibilities including developing curriculum, recruiting and hiring faculty, determining faculty payroll, developing catalog descriptions and preparing catalog copy, determining marketing strategies, monitoring program budgets to assure fiscal success, dealing with exceptional student concerns, handling faculty questions and support, and planning future directions for the programs. The specific programs currently under the Associate Dean's responsibility include Special Sessions, Winter Session, Summer Session, Contract Credit, Open University, and Domestic Short-term San Francisco Study. In consultation with the Dean, the Associate Dean supervises grant writing and other program development activities in support of the College's programs and projects. The Associate Dean represents the College on various campus committees, task forces, boards, and ad hoc groups.

Additionally, the Associate Dean participates in, and occasionally leads, off-campus community outreach activities and events. The Associate Dean oversees the on-campus registration and record-keeping systems for CELIA. These systems allow students to enroll in and receive permanent records for courses offered through CELIA. Policies and procedures must be monitored and revised continuously to maximize service to CELIA students and improve the registration process. The Associate Dean supervises the staff members who carry out the day-to-day functions supporting the process. The candidate also serves as the final point of appeal for student petitions and exceptional requests. The Associate Dean has the authority to rule on academic/grade requests and financial exceptions. In close consultation with the AVP/Dean, the Associate Dean also supervises CELIA Fiscal Services.

Minimum Qualifications*

- Earned doctorate in a discipline currently represented in the University.
- Experience in program administration, supervision, and fiscal management, preferably in a university Extended Education unit.
- Demonstrated evidence of substantial leadership ability, excellent organizational, administrative, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Significant experience with operational management of educational training programs, curriculum development and program planning, including experience in the development and revision of academic courses and programs.
- Ability to interact with academic credibility among University faculty and fellow academic administrators.
