The Department of Civil Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track position in transportation engineering. The Civil Department has 10 full-time faculty members who serve more than 700 undergraduate majors and more than 75 graduate students. The department offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Masters of Science (M.S.) degree programs in civil engineering.

Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Pavement Engineering, or equivalent field, which must be completed by August 1, 2013.

Special Knowledge and Abilities:
A strong background in transportation engineering and a strong commitment to quality teaching are required. Preference will be given to applicants who have additional knowledge and expertise, such as use of computer applications in transportation engineering. Applicant must have effective oral and written communication skills and must be able to relate theory to practice.

University-level teaching and/or transportation engineering experience in industry is desired. Professional registration as a Civil Engineer in California or the ability to become registered within four (4) years is required. The successful candidate must have experience in developing projects and the ability to assist and guide student projects. Preference will be given to applicants who show the ability to or have worked with diverse groups.


Duties will include: (1) effectively teaching courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, (2) developing curriculum, advising students and other instructionally-related duties, (3) working cooperatively with a diverse student population and with faculty colleagues on department, college and university-wide committees, (4) developing and engaging in scholarly activities, including research and externally-funded projects, (5) developing and supervising Master’s student research, and (6) providing service to the campus and community.

Primary teaching responsibilities will be transportation engineering courses in the B.S. and M.S. Civil Engineering degree programs. Secondary teaching responsibilities may include: surveying, engineering drawing/computer-aided design, engineering economics, computer applications, and/or statistics.


The tenure-track position is full-time and will be at the Assistant Professor rank, with the starting salary dependent upon qualifications and professional experience. Salary is commensurate with educational preparation, university-level teaching experience, and record of scholarship and service. Sacramento State offers excellent benefits and retirement programs.
